I have a auto 90 Camry 4cyl.
Have been having problems with the air not working correctly at idle. Clutch engages and disengages at idle. Timing is correct. Idle seems low.
When air is engaged the idle does not rise. Should it and what controls the idle when air is engaged ?

You saying that the A/C pump's clutch disengages at idle? That's normal.

My 4Runner does that...I guess it's a safety measure so you don't overheat the engine at idle with so much strain on it.

Now, if you're not getting cold air at idle, then you've got a problem. RPM's stay fairly steady when A/C is on or not...

That's my problem.

At Idle the AC clutch disengages and it starts blowing hot air.
My wife has MS and goes into meltdown mod if her body gets to hot so this is a real problem for me.

Any help is appreciated !!

So your A/C is working...just that it's clutch is acting stupid...

I say you're getting into an electrical problem...It's normal for the A/C pulley to disengage (at least on the 4Runner, I've noticed it disengage, the revs jump 100rpms, then settle back to normal again), but then again, I set the thing on auto climate control at 19.5c and leave it there...

I guess your '90 doesn't have auto climate...and i'm not that good at problems, so don't take my words as golden...hope I helped though...

If the problem can't be fixed, and considering your wife has MS, maybe you should take it into a dealer or another respected mechanic. I wouldn't want to mess around with climate control especially knowing your wife depends on the temperature. May as well just get it over and fixed with, rather than trying to figure out what it is. Thats just my 2 cents.
