I can now say I out-dynoed a dyno!

I found out recently from kids from my church that my old high school had a dyno! I asked my old auto teacher if I could come during class to try it out and he agreed. Well I went in there this morning and lit er up. It's an old chassis dyno from the 60's or 70's with a dial type reading.

At 5000RPM in 1st, my friend increased brake force. We put the sucker to full brake and the car still had juice to boot! I'm sure the brakes were just worn or something, but I can say I out-dynoed a dyno!!

The readout was wierd, two concentric scales, brake hp and ft-lbs. Brake hp measured from 0-130 and corresponding torque from 0 to like 300 something. At full brake at 5000RPM, the dyno read 80bhp (??) and the corresponding torque at 250ft.lbs. What I don't understand is how 80bhp translates into 250ft-lbs. I also have a hard time believing that my car has 250ft.lbs of torque! Probably miscalibrated. When we did the 40mph test at about full brake, the dyno read ~210ft.lbs. That's a really high number - I would love to have that much torque at the wheels!

A mech here at work did some quick calculations and he said it was possible, and that kind of torque corresponded to about 225hp given RPM at reading (close but higher than what I think the car actually has). I have to ask him for these equations, but I still don't believe him.

Any thoughts?

The 40mph test was administered in 2nd. Why 3rd or 4th?

The tranny increases engine torque...well, not really engine torque, but torque to the wheels.
1st and 2nd gear would have the most torque, since it has the most reduction. The numbers that the manufacture gives are flywheel numbers, done on an engine dyno.
Put the 4Runner in low range and torque might skyrocket to diesel bus levels...hehehehe

But sorry to say, you've only got 80 wheel horse-power!

j/k...1st and second gear increases torque, and cuts HP...try it again in 4th gear...this way, you would get a better figure of what the engine is actually putting out to the wheels.

I'm just wondering why the shop teacher did not know this...

I wonder what Mustangs are going to think when they are beat by a 80hp car...

But again, how does 80bhp translate into 250ft.lbs? There were two scales!

don't do it in 2nd

not enough load
and realistically, you don't drive around in 2nd gear. so any readings would be useless, unless that is the only gear you have and you like travelling at 70km/h max.

You wanna dyno the car where the gear ratio is the closest to 1:1 on most cars its 4th, on older hondas its 3rd.

Man what are you driving?
You never dyno is first, you dyno in 4th gear. Then look at the speedometer when you are hitting the redline and you should see 240KM/H.

4th gear redline will get me up to 240km/h?
what gear ratios are you running?

so does that mean 5th will take me up to 300km/h?

come out to the next meet, we will be in markham anyway rerx7.

Well for those of you whom didn't read my signature I drives a FD. 300km/h in 5th is something that I wanted to try I only got to 280km/h in 5th and once I reached 280km/h I backed off cause it was pretty scary driving at that kind of speed on a public highway.
as for 240km/h on 4th I have picture to prove that  but I don't know how to post pic on this forum.
you guys can also go to my site to see http://www.geocities.com/rerx7
