does it get real hot while the engine is running? is it safe to use some teflon tape to help make the seal on a cai?

I wouldn't use teflon tape. It gets warm (I just cleaned mine out today after driving around a bit), and might melt it (I wouldn't want to clean the teflon tape out of the TB, but that's me), but then again, it's not like radiator hot or anything.

Most Toyota TBs are heated by the coolant.

Where do you want to put the teflon tape? It doesn't make any sense to me why you would want or need to use any on a CAI...

If you need a bung on the intake, have it welded on. If you are talking about between the intake pipes, use rubber couplings and it will be sealed.

To connect the intake pipe to the T/B you should use a silicone coupling and hose clamps such as seen here:

Teflon Tape does not melt until it is heated above 500 degrees F for mossst tapes, although the use of tape ought to be discouraged there, as well as nay oil lines..... th eproper way is to use plumbers dope, tape and dope for threaded fittings.

Tape on compression fitting or a barbed fitting does not make any sense!
