Installed my SS brake lines from the group buy, tonight. Well, half installed...
Overall it's a fairly easy procedure to do, provided you have the right tools to get at and around the brake lines, and you don't mind smelling like a funky combination of brake fluid and Lava soap afterwards
I'm not going to go into a howto cause really it's super easy. Look in the haynes manual, that's what you need to do.
However....
I had some problems with these lines.
First off, the lines are apparently in standard units, not metric. Not a biggie, but caused some head scratching.
Second, the grey clip pictured here
There was no replacement clip with the lines, and the OEM retaining clip is too thin... I had to bend up the clip to make it actually work as a retaining piece.
Third, referring to my "half-installed" comment, I could not install the rear lines to my drums due to the following
The more astute of you will notice that the long black piece on the SS line gets in the way of allowing me to actually bolt that black bracket to the car and still be able to hook up the brake line... And even if I wanted to fiddle with it and just leave the thing unbolted, I attempted to just finish the install minus that piece and discovered the line will not fit into the drum end of the SS brake line. I didn't really force it, so it may have been user error there, but that plus the non-bolting aspect (the little black bracket) were enough for me to just say, "fuck it" and leave the rubber hoses on for now.
Having said all that, my impressions with just the front SS lines:
Pedal pressure feels more solid now. Less squishy. Normal braking seems about the same, but hard braking shows a definite improvement. Interestingly enough, the brake release seems improved as well, even after hard stops.
It's really hard to say that these have dramatically improved my stopping and brake-control, cause I'm trying to avoid placebo effect... also, I bled the brakes so that will affect my impressions anyway. However, I will say that there's enough of a difference that I can notice a change in my braking style... not that it feels like a new car or new brakes, just, well, different. Better.
