This was just a school. Not an actual event so the runs weren't timed. They had us do a few drills in the morning like figure 8's, going in circles to find the limitations of our cars during rotations and a threshold braking exercise. At the end of the day, a course was set up to apply everything we learned from the drills.
My Matrix suprisingly handled really well. Enough to get even kudos from a few instructors. I'd even say my skills were a lot better than the hordes of Miatas that were there.
Looking forward to an actual event! I think wedge is back there again today for an official event. Hope he's doing well...it's raining out.
Sweet, glad you had fun! Yeah, for the miata drivers... I've found a lot of guys expect their car to do everything for them. Like the last event I went to there was a corvette group running first. On the same track and same conditions, I was faster than a lot of the corvette guys there cause they just didn't concentrate or didn't know how to drive or expected their badass p1mp ride to do the driving for them.
Looking at the vids, your car looks like it has some get up and go, and seems to handle really well They really were slalom happy when they set up that course, weren't they?
Don't worry about wedge, he's a fighter I almost feel sorry for his paseo
Oh geez!
What great vids man! I didn't even know you were recording me.
Too bad you had to record the ONE AND ONLY run that I screwed up on! I completely overshot one of the gates near the end
Did you stick around til the end? There was a draw for some door prizes, and I got $100 off tires. So I'll have some shiny new R-compounds before the next event.
I stayed up until 2am the day before the school installing my new racing suspension. I can't believe how well it worked. It's going to be even better once I get it aligned, and get the camber/caster/ride height set to some optimal levels. They're still at the oem settings.
Oh well. It was a great day, I had alot of fun, and learned quite a bit myself.
The event yesterday in the rain was incredible! Definately one of the best events I've ever been to. The course setup was perfect. It was fast and flowing, there were no 'tricks' anywhere. And the rain just made it a whole lot more fun too. I put my good tires on the front, and my bald tires on the back. I took it easy on my first run, and relized how much faster I could actually go. My second run was nearly perfect, it could have easily been my FTD, if I didn't spin the car on the very last turn! My third run was also really good, except for some massive oversteer (which I recovered from). I think my 4th run was my fastest, but I don't actually have the time from it yet. My 5th I just went too hard, and made too many mistakes.
I thought you were going to be at the event? I'm telling you man, the rain made it even MORE FUN! Are you going to be at the next even in Picton?
I can't believe this! My fastest run was my last one! I don't believe it at all! Considering that I made a whole bunch of minor mistakes in that one. My second last run (also my second fastest) is still the one I'm most proud of though. It was a nice clean 'textbook' run. It was damn near perfect. Apparently tho, the reason I was able to do it so well, was because I wasn't pushing hard enough. Makes me wonder how fast my final run could have been if I had've been just a little bit smoother...
Not only that, but how scary is this: There were two Paseo's entered in this event, our FTD's were only 8/1000's of a second apart! I was on top of course. I'm definately proud of that, I've never beaten that guy before. He's a better driver than I am, but I have more power than him. I think my new suspension is what really made the difference however.
Yeah, I won that $100 coupon off tires too. I saw the results from yesterday's event this morning and saw your times. I guess it's good that you got better times after each run. I still can't believe you got 5 runs and I heard there were over 80 cars there! And I thought there were too many cars at the school!
I didn't sign up for the series but I hope to make it out to a few events in the summer whether it's a regional or a local club event.
I guess you could say I did do some autocrossing yesterday...at the MINI test fly event.
It's true, my times did improve after each run. But if you look, pretty much everybody's times improved throughout the day. I think it had alot to do with the fact that the lines were being cleaned off (it's a very dirty parking lot). I could have had much better times if I hadn'd made so many mistakes.
80 competitors isn't that much. I've seen some events with over 100
I heard about that Mini event? What was it all about?
I wish the course set up at the school was more 'fast and flowing'. Well at least the first portion was w/ the slalom. After that, it got a bit technical and couldn't gain much speed throught the second half.
Mini set up a test drive event at Downsview Park/airbase. They had one last year too but this was my first time going. They had 15 Minis (5 autos w/ CVT, 5 5spd, 5 Cooper S's) to take out on a pseudo-autocross course. It was pretty nice to beat up a car that's not your own. I was able to take out each of the different trim levels. The supercharged 6 spd is definitely the winner.
