what kind of additives do you run through your car? do they work at all?
i run off-street legal octane booster and it does what it claims. it boosts the octane concentration in the gasoline. its like $5 for a bottle so not really worth it for the very very minimal performance increase it gives. ive pretty much noticed that it only quiets down the lifters and reduces some noise, but thats probably the detergants that it contains.
i have also used the stuff that is supposed to clean the fuel injectors and i personally didnt notice any difference. with 13 years of buildup on the injectors, id rather just get new injectors. it did provide a little more throttle responce though.
so what do you guys think about additives? waste of money?
I don't use octane booster because my car is designed for 87, and 87 is what I run. Running anything more is a waste of money and makes the car perform worse.
Techron and Redline fuel injector cleaner are good, most other stuff out there is crap.

1/4 mile: barely
Where I work, we do a lot of system flushes with a company called Wynns. They make pretty good products and I have a lot of faith in using their tools on customer cars.
Anyways, they make an additive called dry fuel, its suposed to remove condinsation from the tank and lines. I put some gas in my tank and added the container. Low and behold about part way through the tank the car starts runing like a bag of crap. Long story short, it ate away my fuel filter. I think though, that if the tank had been full I may have been okay as I later found out by reading the bottle.
So, I thought I'd share that with you as its the only experience Ive had with additives.
They selheap stuff at Target. Red bottle. It cleans out the fuel injectors and carbon deposites. Works great. I think it is $5.00 for a three pack. Your just dump it in before you fill-up. I try to run it everytime if I remember. It improves your mileage. It has given me another 5 miles to the gallon or so. Worth it at this point.
userlain: From what I know of your engine (correct me if I'm wrong), it's a I4. And with that engine, adding octane boost ins't really helping you.
At this point, are you running high octane fuel? Because that will be making it even worse. Most 4 cyl (unless turbocharged) don't need to run high octane fuel. Most run 87 octane. By adding octane boost your causing carbon deposites to form in your engine. And that's going to do some nasty damage over time. Deing an older car, you might not want to do that. But if it is pretty low mileage, you have a while to go beofre any major problems come up.
