is there a way to temporarily unhook the power steering to see what the gains are like? and to see if its alright to drive without power steering then i might want to keep it like that

Just take the belt off, I did that on my 89 celica gts because
I had a leak in the system.

Hard to get to the power steering pump on this car its behind the
engine a real pain, anyway couldnt leave it like that because its to hard to steer the car at low speeds and parking is almost impossible.

The gain in power was immediate though you can feel a difference
with the load off the crank to bad toyota never made this car with
a manual rack.
