Are you sure it's an interference motor? I know the 1mz isn't an interference motor.

I've heard from at least a half dozen sources that the 3MZ is in fact, an interference design. You're right about the 1MZ, though, and this would seem all the more strange since the 3MZ is, in essence, a bored out 1MZ. Maybe they just got more aggressive with the timing and geometry of valve operation.

if i remember right, interference means the valve are angled closer to the pistons.

The 3MZ being an interference design may result from a change in geometry. The meaning of this, though, is that upon a failure of timing (the timing belt breaking being the usual culprit), the valves will actually strike the pistons before the engine stops. As you can imagine, this is not good for overall engine health (and makes replacing the timing belt pale into insignificance). Being "non-interference" is just a safety factor not enjoyed by the interference designs. So you 3MZ owners need to be especially careful not to mess with TB change intervals.

I heard all VVT-i and VVTL-i engines are interference, someone correct this if I'm wrong.
