they provide a resiviour for the hose that come out of your valve cover to be routed to.
there is a lot of condensation and oil that gets thru this pipe.
in a stock set up this pipe goes right into the intake plenum which effectivly gums up the intake and throttle runners..
with a catch can, the plenum is plugged and the hose goes to this container, and then out the container venting to atmoshpere.
you could also just run a hose out to your under your engine bay, but most racing regulations state that a catch can MUST be used, to prevent any oil from getting onto the track.
make sure that if you try to make one yourself, you use suitably large internal diameter hosing so that there will not be any excess build up of pressure in the crankcase.
Excess pressure can drive oil past perfectly good gaskets and piston rings.

O.K. now I know.
What I did before with my old motor was I had a mini crankcase breather filter installed on the valve cover part and I pluged the intake part. But I noticed too much oil fumes coming out of the filter so put it back.
the cusco oil catch can kit costs $ 195. I think thats too much. So If I just put a long hose from the valve cover to almost the floor and plug the intake end, will I be O.K.
Can I also remove the whole EGR system because it resirculates alot of junk too?
The EGR system only operates at idle and partial throttle. It's there to help cool down the cylinder chamber by releasing CO2. Your car will heat up and run lean without it.
Also, there are many other low cost catch cans. Right now I have a breather on the crankcase hose that I routed down near the tranny. When I start smelling the vapors, that's when I know it needs to be cleaned or replaced.
Do you just have the hose going down near the tranny or do you have the little breather at the end of it. Also did you plug the opening on the intake side?

not to be harsh, but that is untrue.
the exact same engine is running in japan without an egr and it doesn't overheat. the rad is the same, the water pumps are the same, and there isn't some super chemical they put into the coolant.
the egr is here to recirculate exhaust gases to have them reburned, this lowers overall tail pipe emissions.
this also lowers overall oxygen that is being taken into each cylinder, so by blocking this, you won't see a huge gain in power, but there is a somewhat noticable difference.

again, a breater doesn't filter VAPOR. nor does it filter crank case odor.
if you think otherwise, connect the breather/fitler/waste-of-money directly to your valve cover. i gaurentee you will be smelling pretty disgusting fumes within 5-15 mins of driving. This does wonders for the passengers in your car when you try to use your climate control system.
it is the same if you left the hose dangling there where at least the condensation could drip onto the ground rather than have a filter absorb this.

Im sure most of you know of migs, he has a good recipe for a custome catch can. http://members.shaw.ca/migsman/DODMain.htm Im gonna use it, rather than buy one for $200.00

hey andrew, what does that smell..smell like?
does it smell like burnt exhaust fumes?
cuz our 86 wreaks ahaha
btw if it smeels like burnt exhast fumes, you most likely have an exhuast leak or your egr system is crapping out, or your exhaust manifold is cracked or the manifold gasket needs to be replaced.
if those don't cure the problem, you are not smelling exhaust fumes.

i don't know what heat these pepsi bottles can withstand, but in an experiment on my friends ae86, we tried using one of those big mc donalds supersize plastic cups, i think it had a 850ml capacity.
the plastic was pretty thick and we thought it would be alright.
however after 15 laps around nelson @ shannonville, we checked the container for any oil (as the ae86 has a tendency to push oil thru that valve cover vent on had left hand turns)
to our surprise, the oil was so hot it melted the bottom of the cup... so much that there was only a hole there.
