oh yeah..i;m getting a muffler installed this weekend and it's a weld on. if it doesnt pass the smog test (in about 6 months) what should i do? can i take it off before the smog test and put it back on? or is it permanent? yeah, i'm new at this...gotta lot to learn..
and what else can i do to increase horsepower and torque?
isnt a muffler suppose to ease the flow of the exhaust therefor letting the engine work less and therefore giving it more power? maybe not torque but more hp.
After the cat, you can do whatever you want. That's why there are so many cat back systems. Muffler won't make any difference to the smog station. Muffler alone may not make any difference in power either, a cat back system(or one you make yourself if it's well done) can sometimes show an improvement in power if the stock system is poor.

Dude, save yourself the cash and stop before you ruin your nice car. You're not going to get any more performance out of that corrola without some MAJOR modifications. mufflers, airfilters, "chips" all a bunch of crap, just keep the car mostly stock, do some appearence stuff, get a nice stereo, and be happy you have the privilage to drive what you drive.

yeah i can understand what youre saying. i've been iffy about fixing up my car. cause i don't wanna spend too much cause i'm getting a new ride in about 18 months. but i still want the muffler (for sound effects, if not hp) and a tach. thats about it though. possibly a CAI. i'm not sure yet..

Your comments make me sad. I think you need to read this and site http://www.riceboypage.com/

how do i know if a 'universal' muffler fits? my friend can get a great price on a tenzo x spec muffler but i dont wanna buy it if it doesnt fit. cause 'universal' doesn't always mean it will fit on -everything-
Stevethecleric:
rims: they look great. thats why i put them on. and i spent weeks researching which ones fit and will give me the best performance.
muffler: gotta love that deep roaring sound they make
tach: just wanna see my rpm is all..not like it costs a whole bunch
CAI s/c etc. are not on my priority list to get. i dont really even care -that- much if i get them or not.
Yeah, your rims are tight, dont know what "performance" you think you're getting, but come on! why do you want to be able to hear your exhaust from a block away? Do you know how loud those things are inside the car? And if you want a tach, find a corolla cluster with a tach and put it in, those aftermarket tachs are FUGLY and really pointless.

dont be so hard on him steve, he came here asking for advice, anyway you arent going to get any kind of power gain at all from exhaust work, its still just a 4 cylinder, i would advise saving up for a bit and going with a really good setup, the muffler shop SHOULD help you out here, dont go to one where the people running it dont help any, ask them lots of questions they should be able to answer them, i went to a shop and the guy there didnt know crap about what would sound like what, dont get me wrong i know there are tons of cars and they will all sound different, but he had no friggin idea as to what the setup i was asking about would sound like and whether or not i should resonate it, and he thought my camry's v6 was just another rice boys 1.8 liter so the setup sounded like crap, but anyway id say a 2.25" cat back with a good resonator and maybe a magnaflow muffler should sound pretty good without being loud and annoying, theres a start but its up to you

what im saying is that his corrolla is a nice car, and putting that muffler on it is going to make it look and sound like crap IMO! those 4 inch cannons that keep showing up on the rear ends of cars these days are horrible. they are high pitched, look goofy and are a nuisance to other drivers and the passangers in your car.
If you want you want the car to sound a little deeper, get a cone filter adapter on your intake, it makes a cool throaty deep sound when you step on the gas, it sounds cool, its cheap, but it doesnt make your car sound like a pissed of weed wacker.
Another point, if you really like the look of those 4 inch tip bee in a can mufflers, dont spend more than like $40 on it, they all sound and look basically the same.
ALSO! SAVE YOUR ORIGINAL MUFFLER!!! when you go to sell the corrola in 18 months, chances are people wont want a loud corrola, before you go and list it for sale, return it to stock, that way youll get to keep your parts you put into it, and youll be able to get a fair price on it. Mufflers and Tach's dont add to resale value, the more than likely take away from it
