Question making a race muffler

Hello you American Toyota friends,

I have a question; I want to make a race muffler my self.
But I can’t find an exploded view from it, on the internet.

Is there someone that have an exploded view from a absorbs race muffler?(free flow)

So I can see what I need.

Greats GT-Tyn from Holland

free flow mufflers arent hard to make, take a tube equal to the size of your exhaust pipe and perforate it (drill holes), make end plates and weld them on. Then take some glass-wool/fiberglass chopped strand sheets and wrap them inside it. Then make the outer hull, by getting a pipe as big as you want and then weld the end plates to the outer hull part.

Hello, I had a free flow muffler before
But my ears can’t hold it for 10 miles, because I get deaf from the noise!!!

I want to cut open my old muffler, and rip a the stuff out of it ,and then
I want to modified (upgrade) it to a free flow with absorbs materials.
Because I like the look of my muffler, right now, but the sound is cheap.

But what I want to know is how big must be the holes in the pipe, that I must drill?
And how much holes in a inch?
And is glass-wool/fiberglass good for more than 1 year or 10.000 miles Silence ?

greats Tyn

Here's a link or two to muffler repacking info. Similar to what you want to do, except you need the perforated pipe.

Looks like you tig welded the tube. If thats true, tell me what you need to run a tig. I have a mig welder, but I'd like to weld stainless and its a hassle with a mig welder, so I'm thinking of getting a tig welder.

1. Tig welder
2. Shielding gas
3. Rod
4. Tungsten

Welder
----------

If your only going to weld stainless, a tig welder with DC will do.

But if your planning on welding aluminum, you need one that also does AC.

Try to get one that has a high frequency (HF) feature. It'll help with starting the arc, otherwise you have to stratch start it. You need high freq. to weld aluminum.

Some tig welders come with a air cooled tig torch and some are water cooled. The more expensive tig welders have a water cooling option.

Shielding gas
------------------

Use argon as a shielding gas for tig welding.

Rod
---------

For welding stainless you want to use a rod thats eqivilant or stronger then whatever your welding.

Example: For 304SS use 308SS rod. For 321SS use 347SS rod.

Theres other rods for mild steel, aluminum, chromoly, etc...

Tungsten
--------------

Use 2% thoriated tungsten. You can tell by the red marking on the tungsten.

Mig welding stainless
------------------------------

Its possible to weld stainless using a mig welder, but you need a high powered mig welder (runs off 220V).

A 110V unit will do it, but you need to run a small wire (.023).

Use tri-mix (helium, argon, and co2) as a shielding gas.

Yes it is tig welded. The tig machine is working on 380volt. And works from 10 Amp to 150 Amp.
But for welding the tubes i don't go higer then 25 Amp.Otherwise the stainless steel is melting.
The quality of the stainless steel is 316 ,that must be good for a muffler inside.
