Unhappy Starter problem with 1991 Camry

Greetings:

After coming up empty on a search, and not finding anything relating to the problem my car is having, I ask the gurus here for some assistance.

I have a 1991 Camry. From the research I've done, I have concluded the problem is either the starter, selenoid, or related components. In short, the car won't start 98% of the time, and the battery is fine.

The problem is best described by someone else, here.

I have located the starter in the engine compartment, it's not that tough to get to, but I can't trace the wires anywhere because there are in a plastic covering. To top things off, I don't have a manual for the car.

I would prefer to try to do it myself as it will save major $$$.

Any help appreciated.

Bill

you don't have to worry about where the wires go. just dissconnect them.. disconnect the battery first so you don't get shocked. take out the starter it's only held on by 2 long bolts. then you can take it apart and fix whatever's broken inside. rarely do wires go bad.

Repair your own STARTER view this thread for how to repair it should be the same starter

fyi

Update: I took apart the starter, cleaned the copper contacts and ring with an emery board, but it back together, and it starts up very nicely now.

Problem solved, thanks again for that link atobe.
