cable release for gas door

Ok, so the cable release for my gas door is stuck in the open position on my 2002 camry. This has happened before, and has fixed itself with just wiggling the door release handle under the seat. I've decided that those instances were just lucky, because that solution is not working now. Has this happened to anyone else, and if so, what did you do to fix it?
Thanks to all for your help.
