i kept hearing about shifting without using the clutch...so today, for fun, i was in 4th gear and just tried to push it gently into neutral. guess what? it worked!! ok i may sound stupid here, many of you here must be like "OF COURSE IT WORKED!!". well anyway i tried downshifting from 4th to 3rd while staying on the throttle steadily without depressing the clutch. and guess what again? it worked! my question is...is this bad for the syncros? i did this at like 2500rpm.

The synchro's in the tranny synchronize the speed of the input shaft on the tranny with the speed of the engine.

Some manual tranmissions (old skewl ones) don't have synchro's and this is why they say you need to rev match before you shift, but with the modern tranmissions is not necessary because of the synchro's.

You should use the clutch whenever you shift. Theres a reason why its there.

Synchro's are like clutches so they do eventually wear out.

They'll just wear out faster.

Well yeah really old school trannies...mostly trucks have dog gear non synchro boxes. Well, the syncros will get screwed up if you do it, and after that it isnt so nice to drive around. Plus is it really faster to shift without the clutch? I personally dont think so, unless the car is designed to be driven without the clutch.

clutchless.. hehe

good truck drivers do it all the time, cuz most of them have 12+ gears to go thru, sometimes up to 16...

putting your car into neutral is easy.. but making sure you are at the right rev range for the next gear is a little more difficult..

whatever it is, i wouldn't try it on a toyota box.

I've seen a product made for disabled people that presses the clutch for you when you make any movement on the shifter.

Don't go here, unless u wanna replace the tranny honestly its not worth it. bumping it to neutral isn't to bad it is done but don't shift without the clutch! The rally drivers do this they kill tranny's all the time and yes it will burn the hell outta the syncro's the syncros were made to match the input shaft not the motor! if they were there wouldn't be a clutch

MRS is sequential shift! It does still have a clutch, I believe, but it is operated by computer, and shifted by computer. I saw on E-bay once a Clutchless manual 2000 celica...the picture showed a 5 speed GT with no clutch pedal- BUT with a manual sized brake pedal...so, I don't know if that really existed or if the dude was just a fake.

you can shift easy without a clutch
just rev it up for a down shift and let the revs fall for an upshift. If you learn how to do it, its not bad for the car. If your doing it right, then you cant do it fast. Its good to know in case you clutch pedal breaks, or your test driving new cars. HA!

Sure, if you know how to do it correctly it's not bad for the car, but if you don't already know how to do it you're taking a BIG risk with you tranny.

Also, Volkswagen called their clutchless shifter an "auto-stick" (also offered on the Porsche 914) and it used a vacuum powered torque converter instead of a clutch (at least the first few years wear vacuum). The transmission would "dissingauge the clutch" whenever there was movement on the shifter (I think). Also, it was a real load of crap, and you don't know how happy I am that my dad's 914 has a good old God fearing all American (or German, I guess) clutch.
