cam sensor

I need help!!!

I had a 1996 corolla with the 4AFE 1.6L, with the crank sensor, I had to replace the engine, the only engine I could get at the time, had no crank sensor, so I took the oil pump and sensor of the old engine and put it on the new one, so it now has a crank sensor, but on start up I got an engine fault, it says the CAM sensor is not working, the engines runs ok but it looses power under load and sometimes it surges. Any one know if the engine with the crank sensor, and the one with out the crank sensor have different cams?? Or know of any other reason for the CAM sensor suddenly not working.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Martin.

Cam sensor? All the 4A-FE I know use the disturbutor for timing signal. You sure its not some aftermarket thing?

No, its not aftermarket, the cam sensor is in the distuributor, it is a magnet pick up, with a lobe on the shaft.

Did you set idle and timing after you put it in?
What about crank sensor? Or you mean the cam sensor?

Ok the original engine had a crank sensor, the engine I replaced it with did not have a crank sensor, so I put the crank sensor from the old engine in the new one. (Some versions had a crank sensor some did not) so now I have an engine fault code in the ecu that says the cam sensor is not working, so the engine is running in “limp home mode”, My question is, did the different versions (with or with out crank sensor) have different cams, if they did, would that explain the cam sensor fault. The distributor is none moveable so I cannot adjust the timing by turning the distributor.
