Hub Centric Wheels

Recently I've been having disagreements with others on the importance of hubcentric wheels.

A) They help center the wheel correctly

B)Help reduce the loading on wheel studs

So are they needed or not? Lets hear some intelligent conversation and facts.

I recommend them whenever possible, mainly due to the fact that anything that can help hold your wheels in ballance is a good thing. However I dont think that you should worry about the load on the wheel studs, mainly due to the fact that they are at least grade 8 bolts with a combined shier strength of probably 50,000lbs+.

I'd say more for the balance....

and also for the ease when bolting your wheels back on...afterall, why not anyway? they don't cost much at all

Well, that's just like asking do you really need to wear a seatbelt? Some morons don't think they do.

Hub centric/ lug centric ???

Where to begin? I learned about this debate the hard way. I have a 97 T100 2WD nice truck so I bought nice tires, but when I left the shop it was shaking pretty bad. Went back and the tech say, oh that machine must be bad we'll rebalance over here.... Me and this tire shop got to be close because they provided 3 new sets of tires, finally they washed their hands of it and said they could do no more. I found a shop that took on the problem, the matched balanced my wheels and tires and it got better but still shook at some speeds, then I learned about this Hunter 9700 Load force machine took it to the dealer, twice and it still shook.

One day kicking around the web I heard the lug centric theroy. Even found out Toyota has a Service Bulletin out on this subject, SU 002 96 which talks about using an adapter for truck wheels with 4 inch or larger center holes. My dealer has the SB but not the adapter.

Bottom line, I found a shop who had the Hunter Load force machine and the adapter, problem solved, no more shake.

Why did it work? Why are the lug hole centric and not hub centeric? I don't have a clue, but I know it makes a difference in balancing my trucks stock alloy rims and tires.

Al

I know they're important but I've given up on convincing them. They seem not to care...

You know, it's just one of those things. I wouldn't say that it's a Darwin thing, but some people just don't care/pay attention to things like this.

With these people, I just wonder what else in their life they don't take their time to find out all the facts about and see how they can improve themselves.

Its pretty easy,

Your car's contact to the planet is through these four discs that spin.
These are your wheels and tires, agreed?
If they are not mounted as closely to center, they are out of round.
If so, they will force the axle to rise and fall if they are not dead center. Think of cams.
On matched wheel to hub mounts, they mount perfectly center because the wheel's center will match the flange on the hub. No chance for an out of round condition. The mating surface will be perfect.
However in our world, when we use a wheel that has a center larger than the hub fitment, there exists an opportunity for slop. Even self centering nuts cannot pull the wheel as close to the perfect center. Now multiply that by four wheels. Bouncy.
To correct this situation, we use an adapter, the hub centric ring.
See wheel dealer unless you know the exact measurements of wheel and hub.

It's not true that balancing is the only cause for the shakes. You can have four perfectly balanced tires but with one wheel not centered, no cure wobbles. Hub centrics do just that, make your mount centric to reduce wear and tear, discomfort, etc.

I would like a set but I do not want to expect more dealer sex to get them.
