What is your question in relation to? It would help if I knew what caused you to raise your question.

If you are referring to a charcoal canister on a carburetted (non-fuel-injected :P) car, then it is part of the god awful pollution gear. Basically charcoal collects noxious gasses and traps them...Simple really?

Cheers

You can remove it, but you'll smell fuel all day long. The charcoal canister has a line running from the tank to it, and then to the vacuum system. Fumes get sucked in when the car is warm and enter the intake stream. Removing it can cause problems, leaving it on, none. No power losses, no stink, no inspection problems. Now, if space is an issue, a smaller one will do. I recommend one from a honda as theirs are tiny by comparison to those I've seen used on especially older Toyotas.

Canada

Thanks for the info. The reason for the question was that this SR5 is being preped for ice racing. No need for polution control stuff. There are two reasons that we would like to remove it. One being that it just takes up space and gets in the way. The other was additional power (none I guess).
