I'm not familiar with the Mallory boxes, but if its anything like the MSD boxes it should just be a matter of disabling the stock coil.

The 2 wires that goto the stock coil are then used to trigger the ignition amplifier. You can also splice into the wires on the ignitor, this is what I did since I have a external ignitor.

I have a msd 6a, msd blaster ss coil, and msd 8910-eis tach adapter on a 3S-FE (88 Camry).

From what I understand all Toyotas need a tach adapter. Contact MSD or Mallory and ask them if you need one for your 22R.

do msd/mallory ignitions really burn plugs up?

I read where they burn plugs at an accelerated rate.I dont want to be Xing plugs all the time because ive got one cylander spark plug hole thread thats touch and go for crossthread. What about those Platinum and irridium plugs?? Thanks for the great "reply and schooling the unlearned"By the way,on hooking up the MSD to the factory ignitor on my "89 22r truck ignotor-do I then disable the ignitor(unplug it)?IN the end both the coil(with new blaster coil) and Ignitor shoould be disabled.Do I need a Tach adaptor if my truck don't have a tach? What about a rev limiter. T.I.A!

I haven't noticed those problems.

You need the ignitor, don't unplug it. The only thing you disable is the stock coil.

Use the 2 wires that goto the stock coil as a trigger for the MSD. You can also find these 2 wires on the ignitor, the stock coil and ignitor is connected together. So use the wires on the coil or ignitor, which one you use is up to you.

I don't know if you need a tach adapter or not for your 22R. Best thing to do is contact MSD and ask them.

MSD 6AL has a rev limiter function.

For what it's worth..

I installed a Jacobs Electronics ECU and coil in my '90 otherwise stock 22R many years ago and it has worked flawlessly since. I want to say I retained the stock igniter,... if I recall correctly wasn't it in the cast metal base with the wire coming out that held the stock coil? In any case, I just did what the voice on the technical assistance phone line said and got 'er done. I think my wife paid about $400 for the ignition upgrade which came packaged as a kit.
