Just asking, has anyone made their own shiftlight? I'd be interested to make one myself that I could integrate into the gauge-cluster to use a warninglight not in use, so if anyone has made their own shiftlight and is willing to give a circuit diagram, I'd be greatful.

I know for a fact that you tap it in the tach wire and use an RPM switch, but I have no clue how to make one.
Also, I personally think that all shiftlights that are on sale are just damn ugly. I mean just look at the autometer one, its HUGE! Really tacky imho.

Yeah, I agree, they're ugly. I don't know why you'd need a shift light anyway, unless you have like a 900hp Supra. And unless you have astigmatism, you should be able to see where your rpm needle is without taking your eyes off the road. And it's not really a big deal to take your eyes off the road for a split second anyway.

I think with some of the shiftlights, you actually set the RPM you want it to light up at...not positive, but I thought I read that somewhere.

Maybe I'll make one for my automatic!!!

i need one because i must drive past redline on my tach cos my motor and ecu is different. redline according to my tack is 6300 rpm or so...but redline for my motor is 7500 and fuel cutoff is 7800

You can in theory make a real cheap one using an LED and a AA.

You attach a wire to the inside of the tach needle- so it moves with the needle. Then you put a conductive plate where your redline begins...hook the plate up to the LED, hook it all together when the AA. When the needle hits redline, it would complete the circuit and light the LED.

OR you can research how the $90 shift lights work, and raid radio shack for the parts to put it together...(unless, of course, there's a chip).

TRD well, I'm trying to figure out how #2 works. As for the need of it, no I dont really need it, but I figure since I have empty warninglights I could stick it there  its just a novel thing, heh and gets the attention of the opposite sex ;D (just kidding on that last part). Just for fun actually.
Anyhow I know that the construction is VERY basic, but none of my friends will allow me to open their unit up ;P I do know that the pill is just a resistor that you change, and that can be swapped with a potentiometer

doesn't the tach wire work on electrical impulses? So at higher RPMS, the wire starts feeding more pulses towards the tach?

couldn't you just use a resistor or something so that when a certain current is hit, it lights up an led (light, or whatever?)

Why can't you just listen to your motor?

Well, I can hear my engine alright, blaring at me with about 100db, but its not that I cant do something. If you look at my post above, I'm just stating that I want to do a shiftlight mainly for fun.

some RPM guages are different...but i'm pretty sure it's electrical impulses as well...if it is impulses, use a capacitor (you will have to use a voltmeter to figure out how much volts are being impulsed at redline), then buy a capacitor for that voltage...

the capacitor (I think that what you call it) will save power until the voltage is meet (redline), then shoot the voltage out, lighting the light...but adding a capacitor *might* cause inaccuracy in the impulses to the tach once the light goes on...
