extra narrow a/f gauge Q

Ok, well i got my narrow band a/f gauge hooked up, turns out i was tapping the correct wires last time, just the gauge that i had was broken, so i got a new one and everything works...

Now i have a question about what i see when i am driving...

I ended up tapping the blue o2 wire, directly off of the o2 sensor on a 1mz, instead of going off the the ECU wire...

i understand that the narrow band is not very accurate, but i also understand how it "should" look, that is where my question comes in, when i drive around autometer says it should basically stay around the stoich. mixture, but when i am driving it is always switching from no leds lite, to a quick jump from lean to stoich. then back down where no leds are lite... There is no consistancy at all, also @ WOT it says my gauge should read rich, but it never hits rich, instead no leds hit at all and it is blank... at worst i thought the gauge would show me rich most of the time, but in reality i am never hitting the rich meter at all

soooo question is,
would i get a different result going off of the ecu wire, as opposed to directly off the o2 sensor? or is there something else i should note

(i really understand that the gauge does not give great feedback, spare me that response, but i just want to know why it is not doing what it is supposed to, since all the hook ups went by the manual)

It SHOULD be cycling. It bounces between rich/lean to achieve an average of stoich. I'm guessing when you're at WOT, the O2 sensor's signal voltage is off the scale on the rich side and the Autometer can't read it.

I'm not sure when Toyota switched to using actual air/fuel ratio sensors as opposed to switches.

It won't make a difference where you tap the wire...

i have a faze gauge and everything is hooked up right and it doesn't work. i'm thinking about re-tapping the sensor wire directly to the o2 see if it changes. before when it wasn't hooked up at all it would light all the led's. now that the sensor wire was soldered into the harness its still not working right. should i just tap the o2 sensor wire? the ground is at the battery.

How many wires on the O2? One wire is easiest. Two: 1 ground, 1 signal. Three: GRD, Signal, +12 for heater. Four: add another GRD for heater.
Connect a 1.5V AA battery to the gauge, +ve to signal, -ve to ground and see if the middle LED come on.

Move it to the sensor and see. Maybe wrong wire on harness. Can't trust Harness manual for ECU wiring.
