I want to swap in the 4AGZE supercharged motor or the 1.8L 20V motor. The cheapest way to go would be J-spec. Here is my problem. Who can I go to to get all the wireing done. I have been told that I would have to use an 88 MR2 tranny on my 86 because it's diffrent from the early n/a trannys. Also the Levin tranny won't work because it's set-up for front wheel drive. So right now I'm looking for the engine, tranny, ecu, harness and a shop to intall it for me. Any one can help me???
I'm not sure if it's 1.8. I just know that it was made after the sc motors were made and that they are very popular swaps. I belive they have like 165hp.
I would prefer the legal version, because the cops are really hunting people down now.
But I would be intrested in all versions if price and all is reasonable.
In your case, the least expensive way to install a sc motor into your car would be to find a MR2 SC that's been crashed or locate an inexpensive one with a rusted out body. This way you will have everything you need for the conversion, including transmission, and all electrical wiring.
Lucky Star won't be able to supply you with the MR2 SC tranny, what you'll end up with is a FWD tranny from a Levin with the shifter linkages on the wrong side (some people say they can be modified, some say they can't). You'll also need MR2 SC axles, fwd Levin ones will not work.
Lucky Star won't supply you with an uncut harness either, plus, with a MR2 SC donor car you won't have as much re-wiring to do either. You'll still need to fabricate the ic mounts. In the short term, finding a smashed MR2 SC might not be the easiest but overall, it'll save you hassles of locating + buying missing parts, not to mention the shop labour needed to fabricate things.
Low dollar / smashed MR2 SC's are around in the Toronto area, last year there were 2, not including the one I bought to use as my donor car. One nice thing afterwards is you'll be able to make some money by parting out whatever you don't need or you can keep the leftovers for spare parts.
Didn't you just buy a TechTom socket board off Yoshio too? Unless you ablsolutely want a hardtop or selling your current car is not an option, I'd really recommend just spending the money on a MR2 SC. If you do end up going ahead with either a 20v or SC project, I can recommend a few local shops to you who are more than capable of these swaps.
I have to keep this car no matter what. I invested a tone of dow in every piece of the car. I know the best way to go would be to get a wreched sc car. The problem is I can't find one with an engine.
Lucky star will try to sell you anything, even when I told them that the tranny from Levin won't fit. They still say " it fit, we sell many".
I did do the computer at Joshio. It made a big difference. 11hp at the wheels. The fuel milage went from 350 to 420 on a tank full. Plus the car absolutly flew. Then on the weekend one of my pistons started knocking. Now all that money went down the drain. Again!!! If any one can help with locating a wreched sc car or engine and other bits. I would be very happy. Now the weather is getting nice and I have to drive my dad's Colt.
Jay-Tech in Brampton can do the swap, they're on Melanie Drive and I'll try and find the number for you. John just completed a hi-comp swap on my friend's MR2 rally car.
If you're looking for an MR2 SC transmission with axles, I will be able to sell you them. The only catch is that they won't be available until next summer at the earliest when I do my motor swap, because I'll be driving my 89 SC this winter.
Have you tried calling all the local wreckers in the phone book? Even if they don't have a smashed SC in their yard, they should be able to locate what you need through their recycling network.
I went to Applewood Service Center to find out about the swap for the 4AGZE. I will go through with the installation by them.
I know that the engines come from the Levin. I noticed that the intercooler on the Levin motors sits right on to on the engine. On the MR2 it on the left above the tranny and battery. If in the future I would be able to locate the piping I would be able to relocate the intercoler right? Or do you think they will make custom piping and relocate intercooler so that the engine lid will close. Is the intercooler idetical on the MR2's and Levins or did they upgrade them over the years? The fuel pump will have to be upgrade right? I've heard 7MGTE or an RX-7 one will work great.
The Levin IC isn't in the best of spots, it will heat soak even more than the MR2 SC IC since it is directly overtop the valve covers and won't have any airflow in your car. The Levin IC is also a little smaller than the stock MR2 SC IC, so if you find a MR2 SC IC later on you will definately need some custom pipework to locate it in the MR2 SC spot. The reason is because the SC12 outlets on the MR2 SC and the Levin are slightly different. You'll notice on the MR2 SC, the SC12 outlet is pointing towards the flywheel end of the motor (and towards the IC). On the Levin motor, the SC12 outlet points up towards the top mounted IC. The MR2 SC IC will fit under the hood of a steel MR2 NA engine cover, I'm pretty sure a Levin 4AGZE IC won't clear under your steel engine cover.
MR2 SC fuel pump will work fine if you have one, so will a 7MGTE or 3SGTE unit. I've heard the RX7 pumps work too, but I'm not sure if it's the FC or FD that you'll need.
Drop me an email next time you'll be in the area Martin, I live 5 minutes away from Luis and Ullyses' shop.

Right now I have the sc engine lid installed on the car. But even if it won't clear that lid I will put back the steel lid and cut out a huge square chunk out of the middle of the lid. I'm sure a decent muffler shop will be able to make some custom piping for me once I get the sc intercooler.
One other thing I noticed on the sc cars is the little green light on the instrumentation cluster, it goes on when the sc engages. I was wondering if I get the sc cluster and put it in, will the light start to work or do I need to do some wireing. I know that the n/a to sc conversion consists of changing the wireing to the dash. So I would think that it would work just by installing the sc cluster.
I have the TRD header from by n/a engine.
I know that it will bolt on the head, but im not sure about the o2 sensor location. Does any one know if the o2 readings might be off?
Also the newer J-spec 4AGZE motors come with the DLI ignition. Do they have to have the exact coil for that or are there any others that can be used or modded.
What are the chances of the car passing emissions after the motor is installed?
wild card...HKS once made a turbo kit for your car?!?!?! it will be hard to find but..
just food for thought, i was thinking about a similar swap a NEW harness will run you approx $1500 from toyota
