Canada HID conversion question

I was looking to install HID's on my '00 4Runner. One potential supplier advised that I would need to disable the daytime running lights or hook up the headlights to run all of the time, as the ballasts require a minimum voltage greater than that supplied to run the daytime run lights.

Has anyone done this conversion and how did you address the daytime running light issue?

Thanks,

Vic

Cool

I don't own a 4runner but WTF is that newb trying to sell you stuff talking about??? The entire car runs off the same 12-14.4v that every other normal car does.

HID Ballasts pull 35w @ 12v DC. They normally are fed 12-14.4v depending on how good your alternator is. It's their job to step the 12vdc to a low amp, >20,000v current, and smooth the power fluctuations out.

If you don't like the DRL, just pull the fuse for them out.

Sounds like you are the n00b on this issue... DRLs run the headlights from a lower voltage (normally through a dropping resistor) which will fry HID ballasts...

You may be able to simply unplug the DRL resistor to get rid of the problem, but that doesn't work 100% on every car (my WRX, for example). You can also run the HIDs off a relay which can be triggered by both the DRL power or normal headlight power...

Thanks for the input guys. Anyone know what the life expectancy is for HID bulbs and ballasts? Another couple of quick questions - on the H4 conversion, are there issues with aiming as the bulbs have been rebased and do the H4 HID's have both high and low beam?

Thanks again.

Good quality products i.e. Hella, Philips, Osarm can last a lifetimer of your car.

It is HIGHLY recommanded to get good quality stuff.
As for H4 conversion, since your headlight is not designed for HID lighting, you will create glare or improper beam pattern. And forget about those high low H4 conversion kit, they are no where near good quality.

You could retrofit a pair of bi-xenon projectors into your headlight, to get maximum lighting output. But if you don't have the time to perform the retrofit, i guess H4 kit w/shield would be kool.
