Engine Compression ?? How will effect me??? Wat do i care!!
HI,
I brought a 1993 toyota corolla (143 K) yest. for $1500 . When got a maintenance report from a service centre they said that the compression ratios in the engines are #1) 130 , #2) 110 , #3) 30 , #4) 130.. and also said that it may give some big probs in near future...
How good is their judgement dudes..?? They also recommended me to change VC Gasket (Leak).. Will it help if I change the gasket ($30 ) ??
Replacing the VC gasket will help with leaking oil, but not the low compression.
The low compression on that one cylinder could be piston rings, head gasket, or a valve/valve seat problem. You could get a leak-down test to determine why the compression is low in that cylinder. You may only experience reduced power if you don't do anything at all, or you may experience severe engine failure at some point, depending on what the problem is. Good luck....

Thanks bob..
Can you tell me how much it geneally cost to get leak down test done... And how much it may cost if i want to replace some of the parts in it..
leak down tests shouldn't be that costly. I've done them for my car anda a firends both were done within 1 hour or so. Shops shouldn't charge a arm and a leg for something like it. determining whats wrong. now that might be harder to do.
lol ughh looks like cylinder number three isn't doing so well. You want to have even compression accross all cylinders and it's okay to vary by a little bit but 30:130 is pretty bad lol. like alltrac said, it could be a bad piston ring. To get that problem fixed, you gotta take apart the whole engine, get to the crank, remove the piston, put on the ring, then put everything back together, it's not gunna be a quick and easy task - especially if you dont have the right tools. as for your gasket, yeah, get it replaced asap, it'll help with compression, and right now it's probably burning up oil and maybe, just maybe some coolant also. get it fixed buddy, gotta take care of it.
Leakdown tests aren't too expensive, I don't think. I do my own, so I'm not sure what a shop would charge you, but should be an hour of labor or so. What they find will tell us more. Get results and then post back if you can.
