Canada timing marks

ive got a standard 91 corolla 4dr with a 4a fe engine. im trying to figure out the timing marks. first i found the cam gear marks, one line and a dot. do they line up with the valve cover to gasket surface and which one for base timing? also which position whould to dist rotor be in if tdc on 1 in compression. i found the leads on the cap all messed up. i assume as with other 4 cyl the firing order will be:1,3,4,2 clockwise facing top of dist cap.

help please

dont matter aboput the timing belt now, the 2 low cylinders next to each other is a pretty good indication of a bad head gasket, 160 is about right

get the tbelt off it, pull number one plug and get the piston all the way up, now pop the dist cap and it should turn ccw, there is probably a little number 1 on the cap by a wire tower, simply align the rotor with this tower and you should see some kind of mark aligning probably at 12 o clock on the cam gear, probably a line, put the tbelt back on and put the cap back on, leave the motor on the jack and be shure its not in gear and start it up, see if it sounds and feels right, if it does, put it back together
