opening spark plug gap?

have any of you tried opening the gap up a bit to see if it yields any positive results on your 5S-FE's (or other engines)?
I'm thinking about trying to open it up .004", as after a couple hours of research, I've discovered it's not suggested to open the gap up more than .008" so you may mantain parallel surfaces between the ground and electrode.

I think it's safe to say .004" should be safe, as I've heard of an na mr2 guy running a pretty hefty gap with his stock ignition system without any ill-effects.
I know this will not give tons of power, but I'm assuming it'll be about on par with advancing ignition timing (and is free).

Thanks.

yeah, I'll give it a shot in a month or so, I'll have to take the plugs out then anyhow.

I'm thinking that so long as the stock ignition can keep up with the gap, I should gain some power and mileage from it.

I have the NGK performance wires on, which from what I gather are sufficiently good for a high-performance ignition system.

I'll be looking just to minorly open it up (like I said, only a .004" increase to give it a .048" gap)
