Wastegate venting

Is there any advantage to venting the turbo back into the exhaust manifold rather than dumping it out to atmosphere? Or is it just quieter?

Vent the turbo? I think you meant to say wastegate.

The wastegate (external) is usually vented back into the downpipe. Some ppl vent it off into the atmosphere cos they like the sound.

Actually it is not becasue of peeps like the sound. It's because when the wastegate opens and bypasses some of the exhaust back to the downpipe, you are interupting the flow of the original exhaust, thus cause less flow and slowing ther turbo down. Now, usually only the hardcore extreme set-up will run two exhaust pipes, one for the main and the other for the wastegate. It's really only needed when your gots some serious power going on. Al it does is allow the up-most in flow charateristics of getting all the exhaust out as quick as possible.
