4AGE Oil pump question

Has anybody here had any experience with an oil pump failure before?
What are the symptoms? Would the check engine light go on?

I noticed that my oil pressure is not the same all the time when the engine is at idle speed and the car is a little sluggish lately.

HELP!!!!!!!!!

Norm

also, the oil press gauges on the 86 are grossly inacurate.

check your water temp (inaccurate also) and engine temp to give you clues. If its really hot and you're pressure seems to be low....well you got a problem.

its very rare that Toyotas oil pumps go. those things are bullet proof beyond belief. So take other things into considerations as well.

Would it be wise to invest on aftermarket guages (autometer, etc....)???

oil press

Nick's right, the problem with almost all oem gauges is that they're not calibrated. Oil pressure is a perfect example since it only shows relative pressure, ie: low-medium-high and not 75-125-150psi. The Autometer's don't cost a lot, I think they run under 100$. I'm putting in aftermarket oil pressure gauge into my cars as soon as I can ship the block adaptor (it's mechanical), let me know if you want to check mine out or if you need any help Norm.

I hope for your sake you dont have to replace the oil pump. Trust me its not a fun job. If you do let me know cause I recently replaced the oil pump housing on my 4AGE and could give you some pointers.

Ciao
