Good discussion on x-drilled/slotted brakes

I'm sorry to say, that discussion made me cry. Amazing photo of the powerslot rotor (I knew they're prone to cracking), beautiful words made by Cobra and White GSR.

Cross-cross-posted from Camryman.

james (veteran forum member here who hasn't posted in a while) sent me a link to this thread on the altimas.net forums from back in april... discussing crossdrilled, slotted and plain brake rotors. there's a good bit of tech in there, but unfortunately, one of the admins on that board decided to turn it into a flame war. if you have thick skin (as one of the other posters in that thread mentioned) you will get some GOOD information out of it. if you can't put up with the name-calling or TalK lyKe tH1$ y0! then you probably won't get much out of this thread.

check it out... see what ya think. personally i felt like i learned a good deal about brake systems from it. pay attention to posts from WhiteGSR and Cobra in this thread - they really seem to know their stuff.

MaddMatt is a dumbass.. brake rotors don't heat up as much as the calipers and pads? lol
don't the rotors turn red hot, hotter then anything else?
for god sake when you watch btcc you see the rotors red hot when they brake

i'd imagine pads get even hotter than rotors since they are a smaller surface area and are constantly pressing against the rotors to stop the car. i've had first hand experience as smoke bellowed out from my wheels when i pit my car after about 10 mins of hard lapping at shannonville
note to everyone: oem stuff SUCKS!

in any case, the brake components get flaming hot to the point where the difference in temps is probably insignificant.

my take on cross drilled rotors is that i see porshe carrera 4's with them stock on all fours, same with some mercedes ive seen. that answers all my questions about accountability on part of cross drilled rotors... the f*cking germans, how can you argue with porshe?

The guy that took thermodynamics should know what he's talking about. I have a lot of respect for those that took and understand that class. I sat through one aerothermaldynamics class and my brain almost exploded. I've never understood the reasoning behind xdrilled and slotted, but now I know why they suck.

Speaking of rotors getting hot......my dad's eclipse would practically eat rotors every year...... the rotors on that car would heat up enough to cook anything by just braking from 30-0. I guess they designed the brake cooling ducts poorly....I've yet to experience anything like that on my corolla.....yet....

Did he lube the caliper bolts??

I doubt things like that will happen on a daily driven car.

The following is strictly IMO...

Of course X-Drilled rotors would eat up pads sooner than stock ones, they have holes in them, how could they not. If you have big breaks, a) your gonna stop quicker. b) they stay cooler. c) they look cool. But you cant just buy any normal oem pads. You need to buy heavy duty pads. Best to go with the ones that are ratted for the X-Drilled rotors you buy, and from the same company.
ie.. Brembo rotors=Brembo pads.

A good place to buy Brembo's on the Net ... www.nopionline.com

As a new Celica owner and a person who is interested in performance and not bling bling LOL [new to me] I would never buy drilled or slotted rotor's if I were to spend hard earned cash on better braking I would only get front rotor's that were just a little bigger in diameter then stock with quality pad's for the rear stock is just fine in the rear.

To my knowledge...

Cross drilled is actually NOT for cooling...but more for stopping power...as the edges of the holes allow the pad to bite in better...
Eg...it is more difficult to run your fingers accross the surfact of a cross drilled disc than a smooth one...
This is why cross drilled wears the shit out of your pads and the disc itself...

Slots are to rid of brake dust...

hehehehhe...i've got cross drilled rotors on the scooter...suckers...but then again...I just had to replace my front pads after 7000kms...which I had to see to beleive since the scooter is so light...there was only about 1mm left!...the mech said that had I put on another 500kms or so, and the rotor would have went bye bye as well...
