With Summer coming along, and everyone talking about CAIs, I was wondering if instead of a cone- filter at the end of a cai, If I mounted the existing style air filter (see the pic below) wouldn't more area of filter intake more air, which is better, right?
Those would get soooooo full of bugs & crap... plus you'd get flamed like none other. Probably wouldn't be worth the money you spend on it. And have you compared the surface area of a cone to a panel? Somehow I remember that a cone actually has more.

if a cone has more area than a panel, how would the panel get more bugs, plus it would be behind some kinda mesh or something and not obviously viewable, I was just using the intercooler mounting as an example; it wouldn't be as up-front and visable as that. plus, for a diy CAI, I'm not talking about a ton of money. I would probably spend as much for a cone filter as I would getting another stock style filter.
Or 2 Cones. Then its not the filter restricting air flow, its the pipe, Tb, intake manifold and head. All you need is a bit more area then the intake pipe. A cone have at less 5x that.
Got to K&N's website and look up their filter FAQ and you'll find a lot of good info.
For starters, the best performance is found with a SHORTER and wider filter.
Cone filters are exactly that (cone) so they easily can have more surface area than a panel filter (which is simply flat) while being more compact. Further more, you will get more bugs in it from the design.
pineapple, are you recommending it, or saying it's a bad idea? do you think a cone would be better?
I say it doesn't worth your effort. All the filter we can buy got more area then the throttle body. Of course more area = less restriction but after a certain point it won't make much different. You can run 2 cone filters, one on each side or use the IC like filter. You'll need to make housing and cover for the panel filters. Put the filter behind the bumper so you don't get bugs, rain and snow splash.
