Thumbs up Wastegate/BOV

Are a wastegate and a blow off valve essentially the same thing?

Also how does a boost controler work? Without a boost controler does it always run at maxinum boost?

any help is appreciated.

thanks
Jeff

Thanks, I can run full boost no problem and have been doing it for some time now (15.6psi) But I am looking for a way to maintain boost better through the shifts for autox/drift. Any ideas?

Would upgradng my wastegate allow me to maintain boost through shifts? At every shift (which I belive I am doing rather fast) I seam to almost loose all of my boost.

A momentary lost of boost is normal between shifts. However it should build right back up after the shift. IE: boost --> shift (lost of boost) ---> boost. If you have a boost gauge you can see this happening.

in regards to 88LE after shift the boost takes many 1000rpm to build back up (7500rpm redline). Boost starts to kick in at 3000rpm and doesnt reach full boost till 5800rpm EVERY shift. After each shift boost drops to .1kpa and maxes out at 1.1kpa befor shift.

I am racing a 1989 Nissan Silvia (JDM) (cowers in a corner ) currently I have a HKS BOV and that is all of the mods, It just came off the ship a week ago(using it to promote my business)and I havent made any mods since then but I have done a full refresh on all fluids, belts, plugs etc.

stock turbo from what I can tell, although it seams to run a little high boost compared to a stock one.

Cool

Put a recirculating blow off valve on there. Instead of it venting all your boost into the atmosphere, it just circulates back before the turbo.

Depending on the engine/turbo sizing, an atmospheric BOV's can absolutely kill power. (then again, most of the time they don't) An ECU will still see X amount of boost as the throttle plate is closing and continue to deliver a larger amount of fuel. Instead, you go way rich because none of that air is making it to the engine.

About the higher than normal boost. Look for a manual boost controller to be installed on the wastegate (something like this)

(or this)

(or as simple as a $5 pressure relief valve)

Basically a fitting with two nipples, and something that screws into it. That is the cheapest way to up boost, help slow down wastegate leaking (all spring gates will leak, slowing turbo spool), and play with boost spikes.

'cource it could be an aftermarket wastegate, or simply ECU re-tuning that's allowing for more boost.

Excelent thanks for your help. I now know where to start to try and reduce the turbo drop.
