Offroding and trashed oil filter. Need advice

Was in the Big Bear mountains and hit a rock rolling downhill (yes, I was going too fast) in my RAV4 off-roader and crushed my Oil Filter. No Pressure guage, but it ran OK. When my "idiot light" cam on I she her down and hiked 3 miles out to call another buddy with a 4-wheel-drive.

The support frame for the radiator, etc. was bent upward with no visible damage to oil cooler, etc. Only damage seemed to be the filter.

Replaced the filter and oil, and it will NOY start, or even hint of starting. Sounds fine as it trurns over (no grinding, etc) and I've always run Mobil 1. She never got hot. I'm stumped.

Is ther a computer function which disables the ignition in the event of oil pressure loss? Does this have to be reset via computer analysis machine??

Thanks,

Dani

Well, I'm well aware that that's what skidplates are for, and if you can find one for an off-road version of a 2001 RAV4 I'll give you 500 bucks for it, cuz I've tried everwhur, man.

OK, so compression ran from 40-80 pounds and points in between. Broke the timing chain. With a Subaru this means it just stops; with my DOC 2.0 it means stopped theexhaust cam and trashed valves. Until the head comes off who knows how bad it is.

I want 5 minutes alone with the boneheads that put an oil filter (with the shell thickness of my fingernail) on the BOTTOM of an offroad vehicle.

Oh, and I'll have a nice Zeiss Oild PRESSURE GUAGE on the steering column by next week.
We take that thing to Death Valley camping. My faith is distraught!

You guys think these sandrail shops would weld me up a decet skidplate? I make knives and swords, that type of work is a bit outa my field.

Good news is it happened on a county road, so it is a 500-dollar deductible for a 4,000-dollar job.

Uh, since when is a RAV4 an "offroad vehicle"? They don't even have 4 wheel low.

I've known several girls who have bought these thinking they were off road capable.

Hell, anything can be an offroading vehicle, just drive it off the road!

I basically say if it has any type of 4-wheel drive then it's an off road vehicle in my eyes. That's just compared to my corolla though.

The Rav4 is like a jack of all trades vehicle. Good in everything, expert in nothing. Sure, it has no low range gearing, but it's awd and higher than a normal car clearance lends itself to being capable of mild to moderate offroading in sand and trails. It's no rockhopper that's for sure, but take it back to the street, and it'll outperform a higher suv that'll tip over while the Rav zips thru a tight fast corner better. And no, it's not as capable on the street as a sporty import or American muscle car. It'll get blow awya by pure speed and cornering from those cars, but then take it back offroading, and those cars will be bottoming out and ripping out their exhausts while the Rav4 goes whistling by. Heck, even in a mall parking with moderate speed bumps, the Rav4 can zip right over them while normal cars slow to a damn crawl less they risk scraping their little spoilers.

Neede a whole new engine. YIKES

Well, Ins. is picking up the tab, but I smoked the motor. When I first approached the old mechanic taking it apart he looked at me like I was a retarded teenage girl. After 2 minutes of talking to him we were having a good laugh, and he pronounced all "Idiot lights" as tools and spawn of Satan himself. I asked him if he'd put in a big pressure guage for me. He said "Maybe...bring it in" I think this should be covered by the ins. bill, because it would cover their butts from another 5,000-dollar bill in the future. It is a pittance compared to a longblock.

What do you think?
