Wierd Engine Light

Ok, got a bit of a wierd one... I have an engine light on, but i cant seem to track the thing.

Heres the problem: The engine light is off when the car is stopped, but on when the car is started. The TE1 and E1 short to read codes doesn't work, the Ox1 and E1 are giving correct readings as far as i can tell. The car is running lean (you can smell unburnt fuel), but it's spewing black smoke (which would indicate rich mixture), and is not burning oil or losing water. The Climate control also comes on straight away (it usually waits for the car to heat up first), but the temp guage on the dash is working. Oh: and the AFM is giving correct readings and the oil pressure is right.

Any ideas? The engine is a 20v Silvertop.

Cheers,
Scott

If you smell unburnt fuel in the exhaust, the car is running rich. If you see black smoke, your car is running rich. Your symptoms are consistant.

Short the terminals with the key out of the ignition, then turn the key into the 'on' position. Do not start the car. Read the codes... this should be simple.

Good luck.
