Can't get it into first

My echo is my first manual tranny car and there are some things about an MT that I'm not too familiar with.

Sometimes, I can't get it into first gear with out REALLY pushing on it. It feels like I'm trying to shift without clutching, but i've got the clutch all the way down. I clutch, try to push it into first and it seems like something is preventing me from going into first. I push harder (much harder than I think I should be) and it will go into first. BUT, twice now, a horrible grinding noise has occured when I forced it into first (with the clutch depressed).

What am I doing wrong, or should I go back to the dealer? The car is just over a week old and there is only 600 km on the clock.

Is that at almost a complete stop? If so, take it back and get it looked at.

if the car is stationary its normal to get that occasionally so the dealer wont do anything about it - it should be ok if you release the clutch, wait a couple of secs , depress it again and then try to change.. if its hard to change the next time around then you can complain to the dealer. you never said what speed you are trying to shift into first tho.

usually, I'm at a stop light waiting for it to change, but there have been a couple times that I probably tried to get it into first when I was going too fast (30km or so).

I'm probably gonna find some friends who normally drive stick a lot and see what they think.

What could be the problem be? guesses?

dont force it in best bet is to let the car roll a tiny bit back or forward then try again it should go in no problem, its just the syncros that are hanging up a bit no big problem...

you shouldnt try shifting into first when going too fast... i dunno maybe 15-20km/h max. your tranny will not be happy with you for trying to shift too fast. also, i'd say sometimes it happens where you cant get it in when you are stopped, but then if you roll like 2mm it goes in fine.

Ok.....so after reading some replies from EchoFans, I was super conscious about when I try to get into first, and it turns out that I've been trying to put it into first at about 25km/hr as I coast to a stop. I do not know why I do that, but I do. I always thought that as long as the clutch was depressed, I could move the shifter into any gear, regardless of vehicle speed. I did not know that there is a 1st gear lockout when the vehicle is above a certain speed.

After today's examination of my shifting habits, it seems that my problem was exactly that...MY problem, and not the transmission.

ok yea like everyone said this is really commen on any standard car. All u mainly need to do is release clutch slowly and while releasing to the top put small presure on ur shifter to get it in. It will pop it easily wen ur synch's line up with minimal to no car movement. Problem solved buddy

real easy test here, get it completely stopped, push the clutch all the way down and count to 10, now move the shifter into reverse from n, if it grinds, you are not stopping the input shaft with the clutch, in other words, you are not completely disconnecting the engine from the trans. You might not be able to get the shifter completely into reverse at times because the idler gear teeth align perfectly with the driven gear and the teeth wont drop into mesh but this can easily be fixed by releasing the clutch for a second until the gears align, reverse doesnt have a sincro ring and its just straight cut gears, as for the other gears, they are operated by a slider ring sliding over the edge of the sincro and then when the sincro stops the gear, the slider ring slides onto the gear, if the sincro doesnt get the gear stopped in time, it will crunch into gear on a fast shift, a good habit to get into is put the car into first just before you come to a complete stop or while still rolling backwards from backing up, if the gear teeth align, just let the car roll a little or let the clutch up a little, but never fight the shifter, you will shear sincro teeth and bend the shifter forks that move the slider sleeves, or tear up the shifter cable ends, just keep your mind on the gear teeth
