I was cruising with a Porsche 911 Turbo this afternoon (although I've seen lots of Porsches, the Turbo is very rare) and stared at it for the longest time. So the idea of the wing came up from there.
Materials:
- Molded fiberglass lip - probably needs to be custom made for the car, I think the size should be similar to stock lips like the AE86's or Solara's, maybe a bit longer to be effective. When the lip is down it should have complete contact with the trunk.
- Motor - I'm thinking that the window motor should be strong enough to do the job. The motor will be located inside the trunk right behind the tail lamps. Should this be belt driven?
- Sensor - To activate the lip to go up/down, it's most likely a requirement to have a programmed chip that gets the signal from the ECU (speedo wire?) that once the cruising speed reaches 100km/h and above, the lip will go up. Vice versa when the car slows down.
That's all I can brainstorm for now. Does any of the experts (88LE, Luc, Silver Streak, etc) think this is do-able??
Is that really gonna be practical man? How would you know what angle to put the spoiler at without a wind tunnel?
Well, spoiler (at least large amount of them, espcially the non-oem) are not practical. And I'm pretty sure at least half of the manufacturer (or those that make wings for civics :P ) are unlikely to be tested in wind tunnel before they manufacturer them.
I was actually thinking about putting another servo (?) on the wing to adjust the angles, but I think I went to far on that one.
It would be really sweet it you could pull it off. But I don't think the windshield motors would be strong enough, maybe make it belt driven. Just plan everything before you start hacking up your trunk.

definitely doable.
my quesiton is
where are you gonna tuck it when you are not using it.
It'll act as a lip spolier when it's down.

cuz remember the front splitter is more effective if it's FLUSH with the lower part of the bumper..no?
I'm talking about the rear, not the front. (Actually, the fronts are possible, but it'll require more work + brain juice + $.)

is it really cost effective.
Smell the junk yard.

so stability isn't an issue. (hell, high speed stability isn't even an issue now for my car, let alone yours)
Dude, I think a Porsche 911 Turbo is low enough not to include the speed-sensitive wing for stability unless the driver is taking a corner at 100km/h+.

so my question is: what's to be gained from all of this.
The wow factor man..... the WOW factor!!! 8) 8) 8)
And...
- Nobody has done this before (come on you gotta give me points for that)
- Custom work that nobody have thought of (no Z3 fenders, or any of those taillights/headlights/bodykit transplant)
- Good ghetto project (as I have more to learn from ghetto masters)
- Did I mention it'll look wicked if it's actually made??
Daydreaming elegant? First off, I'm no Porsche expert but I always thought the turbos had a huge immobile whale tail and the Carrera 2/4's had the little tail that popped up?
Well, I'm sure it's very very possible to do something like this but it's just a matter of finding the right materials. It would be pretty cool to have some spoiler move up and down and it would be pretty original. As for functionality, who cares!!!
The main concern would be making it pivot and moving it up and down. If you know anyone with an old Corrado, check it out cuz that spoiler moved up and down (same with the front lip of the Mitsubitshi 3000 GT VR4). I don't think you would need much power moving it, a wiper motor would work fine and they're pretty easy to find. I dunno about hooking it up to the ECU, I'd just add a switch instead...you can use it to "wave" to other cars! Hey, maybe you can make it vacuum controlled...the more gas you give, the higher it pops up!
The hardest part would making it look clean though....
silverstreak is right the hardest part is making it look clean.. i've actually contemplated on doing this ... but when i did a search for the parts.. the best one i can find is hydraulics ( similar to the hoods of most gen 3s) or shorter , and then a motor that only goes one way ... that way it pulls it back or releases it based on speed or whenever it is activated...the problem is putting on... not cos ur rear trunk has no room but when u try to open ur trunk it may close up and slam u in the head cos of it... ( too heavy) go to the junk yards and look at how corrados are done for the rear spoiler.. it should be neat trick for u to check up on.. but not an easy task... hope u get it done nicely...
Well doesnt one of the rice factories make a mechanical wing that adjusts according how much air flows over the wing profile when you gun it. I'm not sure but I think Arospeed makes one.

I don't know if its Arospeed but someone does make a self-adjusting wing.

at what speed is it gonna pop up? think factoring in the amount of force and turbulance the wing's gonna be subjected to at the initial stage of deployment would be good.
that way, you won't be surprised when it "snaps" on ya the first time it pops up
