I use the TRD high-flow sports filter. Acording to the literature it traps more oil polutants AND flows oil more efficiently than OEM. I changed to this last oil change when I switched to synthetic oil. I have not noticed a HUGE difference, but the car does seem to rev a little quicker and idle smoother.

What's the consensus on TRD/OEM, I've heard a lot of people say that TRD stuff is a rip-off, that you are basically just paying for the name that they slap on parts which are already built for less by other companies.
I'm on the fence about this :-?

And???

I am aware of the prices, as I change my own oil and I just bought a TRD filter. I know that TRD parts are over-priced, but that doesn't mean they aren't better than oem right?
I mean, TRD or KVR carbon-metallic pads are a lot more expensive than oem pads, but that doesn't mean they're a rip-off nececarily, they are just made with higher-quility material, which you have to pay for, and you pay some extra on top of that for the name

OEM is $4.75

"Genuine Toyota TRD Part! This Genuine Toyota TRD High Capacity Oil Filter utilizes a unique wire mesh structure that traps more damaging particles than ordinary oil filters, yet provides lower resistance to oil flow. TRD high-capacity oil filters have been proven by race teams across the globe."
$25 US funds.
Wire mesh costs more than acordianed paper.

Whoo Hooo I'm on the good list :P
Why do I need a drain back valve my filter is mounted threads up?
I'd like to take the time to thank Toyota for the genious filter placement on my 99 rolla.
1 thing I leanded from this placement is you can't change your oil when the engine is hot, cause when you loosen that filter the oil runs down your hand ouch

actually for my car at least, kvr pads are quite clost to the oem cost... more expensive doesnt necessarily mean better. i have a short ram intake, it costed money...and it sucks. i made a ghetto ram air by drilling a hole in my bumper and routing an air duct to my airbox. that costs nothing, and it's much better.

Are you serious? MOST people don't change their oil. I would bet that even most people on this board don't change their own oil, although the percentage is probably higher than the "normal" population , maybe half, maybe I'm wrong.

My point wasn't that more $$ = better. I know more money doesn't equal better, but conversly, more money for a similair product doesn't automatically mean it's a rip-off either. In my example, I pointed out the actual differences in the materials used to construct the TRD oil filter vs the OEM oil filter. This difference accounts for at least some of the price increase. After that I did admit that TRD marks up like 20% just for their name, which sucks, but your still getting high quality parts (I know TRD doesn't manufature its own parts). And you're getting parts that were picked and tuned by toyota specialists for specific toyota applications.

All that being said, I'm still kind of on the fence about whether or not TRD products are worth it.
