2nd Generation Camry Spark Plug Tubes

I need some help quick, tomorrow i am planning on resealing my spark plug tubes because the fourth cylinder one is leaking oil. does anyone know, or can anyone give me a step by step walk through to complete this procedure. i would ask my dad, but he doesnt care about the car. so i am taking this project on by myself. thanks in advance for the help, you guys are the greatest.

Joe Portera

P.S. what should i use to reseal the tubes? my dad said something about using RTV. would that work?

pull the cover off and replace the gasket around the edge and the 4 tube seals, tighten the nuts and drive it for a few weeks, then retighten the nuts

is the gasket around the edge that your referring to called the valve cover gasket, or is it something different? i just put a new valve cover gasket on it back in april.

yeah, each spark plug tube has its own gaskets, from what i remember you have to remove the tubes to replace the gaskets though. check a haynes manual.

when you remove the valve cover, there is a gasket between the head and the valve cover, thats the valve cover gasket. the spark plugs have their own.

I just tighened the nuts on my 5SFE and the oil leak went away. Might as well try that if you havent already. You might have a pleasant surprise.

im replacing the tube gaskets because oil is already leaking into the spark plug tube itself, and has been for a long time, even before i took the top end apart, and retorqued everything to factory spec, so that narrowed it down to the tube seals

Tommy is referring to the rocker cover gasket - you can just use RTV on that i think. Should be no prob.
I had exactly the same prob as you, and the gaskets were ok - my guess is that the last person who took the rocker cover off didnt torque it back properly. Its always a possibility, especially if someone worked on it themselves.

Are you replacing the seals at the top or bottom of the tube?

The seals (spark plug tube seals/gaskets) at the top are easy to replace. Theres 4 of them and their underneath the nuts that hold down the valve cover.

The bottom of the tube screws into the cylinder head. You need a special tool to remove the tubes.
