Is there a way to tell if my Celica has a Torsen LSD or an open diff without opening up the differential? Ie, if I can put my car on a lift and turn the rear wheels, will they both turn the same way if there is a LSD and the opposite way or not at all with an open diff.

brake burn out!!! if one wheel spins it is open, if both spin you have LSD.
just joking, jack it up and turn by hand, that way you don't break anything. my friend mike popped by friend scotts rear differential when mike did a brake tried to do a brake burnout in scott's dakota.

Sorry, but there is no other sure way than openning it out.
By the way, most (not all) 90-91 alltrac have open diff.
So turning the wheels while the vehile is off the ground proves nothing?
If I lift one side of the car, and press the gas while in gear, only those wheels in the air should turn if the car were open diff right? But if the rear is torsen, the car will move?
edit: ^ that is a very bad idea now that I think about it.

if your car is auto and you wanna kno if you have LSD then the best way is to do a burn out. but if you want you can also jack up the front and and turn one wheel. the the other wheel turns the same way USUALLy that means you have LSD. its not the most accurate way, cause i kno some opens do the same if the spider gears are clogged.
the best way is to crack open the tranny. another way to chk is to look up your VIN and compare it to the VIN master list for your car to see if the car came with stock LSD.
