Q about turbo

as far as how a turbo works. the clean air is sucked in and pressurized and then goes to the intake manifold. when it comes out another spool blows it out the exhaust right. if i were to hook up a 3sgte turbo manifold to my 96 camry 5sfe and the turbo from it would i just need to connect a pipe to the intake manifold instead of the regular intake. and also what else would i need to do. i dont want an intercooler, just a simple small turbo for little money. how much power gain would i be lookin at.

sounds like you are going to run a system like the burien kit, which does have its hold ups imo... but as i see it you are probably going to have some other issues too...

- you can use the 3s mani but you will need a custom DP for the camry - it is a difficult pipe to make and so you will need a good welder...
- you are also going to want to upgrade your fuel system - to make sure you are feeding your motor enough fuel not to pop... and the a computer system to get this new fuel in line, changing these components will need to be addressed...
- i also highly recc. some gauges to monitor systems like boost, EGT, oil etc. and then the other minor stuff like plugs, map sensor, and such

there are really a lot of 5s turbo discussions on TN, just search 5sfte, 5sfe turbo, turbo camry etc. and you will find what you want

i am sure my system is more overboard then what you desire... but you can find info on it by searching my posts or checking my site for a mods list

hope that helps

Theres 3 major parts to a turbo.

1. Compresser housing.

2. Turbine housing.

3. CHRA (center housing rotating assembly).

CHRA contains the bearings, seals, shaft, etc.... The tubine and compressor wheels are mounted to the CHRA.

Air gets sucked in through the compressor housing (inlet). Its then compressed and blown out the compressor outlet, which is also part of the compresser housing.

Exhaust enters through the turbine housing (inlet) and also leaves through the same housing (outlet).

Since the compressor and turbine wheels are connected together with a shaft, when one spins the other also spins. Turbos are driven by exhaust.

Air enters turbo ---> air is compressed and blown out of the turbo ----> enters engine ---> combustion ---> enters turbo (turbine inlet) ---> leaves turbo (turbine outlet) ---> exhaust.

i can tell you from experience, that is a pretty tough job. the manifold is about the only thing that actually bolts up. but, if you wanna do that, i got a freshly rebuilt ct-26 and oil supply and return lines id sell ya
