Engine part for 3SGTE

The technician at the auto workshop said one of two parts on my car are malfunction. They have something to do with the EGR.

Since I have a 3SGTE, which is not very common, can I use parts from different cars? I found some 2.0L NA Celica I'm thinking 3SFE, 5SFE, 4AFE at the salvage yard only. Can I use those parts or will I need to buy them new for my car. I need the two things which a vacuum line is connected to and it related to the EGR system. I dunno what those are called.

This is a pic from my engine bay

The brown circular thing with 2 hoses connected to it is a EGR VM.

Exhaust gas recirculation vacuum modulator.

No idea what the other circle is pointing to.

This is how it looks on my 5S-FE:

The one you have 2 hose got 3 on the 5S-FE. The one on right side of your photo is the EGR valve. Its bolt on to the intake manifold on the 5S-FE. If you can find one that have same number of connection and mount, it'll work.
Another fix: take them out and clean with throttle body cleaner. Usually they're plugged by exhaust sludge that's why they fail.

My VSV got 3 hose on top and one at bottom connect to the EGR valve. I might have both seating at home. If you are sure they fit, you can have them. I'll post more photo tomorrow.

That's what I found at the salvage yard also.

You said that the usually cause of failure is getting gunked up right? I bought some throttle body/air intake cleaner and will try to clean the thing out first.

How do I remove those two to clean and how to clean them? Do I just spray the cleaner in there followed by compressed air or...?

I suppose I shoul get a repair manual..

---

What are EGR block off plates? What does EGR do anyway? By the sound and looks of it, it sounds like it recirculate exhaust gas back into the engine?

EGR VM is easy to remove. Just remove it from the clip and unplug all the hoses.

EGR valve unbolts.

EGR block off plate = little metal plate that blocks off the outlet on the EGR.

EGR = exhaust gas recirculation. Its only open when your cruising. When you go WOT its closed.

Its nothing more then a valve that works under vacuum.

What is the point of EGR? What would the point of introducing exhaust gas back into the engine? The gas would be inert right?
