3rd Generation Air Lift

Alright since I know nothing about pneumatics I'm gonna ask you guys. I plan on putting the TRD 2000gt body kit on my 91 mr2 and lowering it. The problem is that the car will be too low to get it on a lift to work on. So I decided to install a onboard "lift" kit so that all i have to do is flip a switch and the car will rise (this includes tires and all) kind of like what indy cars use. The best way I could think to do this would be to install 4 small pneumatic presses or whatever you want to call them to raise the car. What I really want to know is what would I need to make this possible. I know that this seems very outside the box but I thought it would also add a nice appeal to the car. Any comments and suggestions would be awesome. Thanks.

Good thinking but, if you have them go to the ground they will drag as you try to drive on the lift.
Hmmmm.......

If this is a steet show car then I would go the easy way and just do an airbag suspension.

For a track car hmmmm........

If you could find something small enough maybe you could mount it between the body and controll arm. Rig it to extend the suspension. That would give you what you are lookng for. The trick there is making it so it dosen't interfere with the suspension during driving.

Hmmmm..........

Maybe a pivot system. Make the top a pivot, and use a quick pin to lock it in place.

Hell its easier to draw a picture(please excuse the crappieness of the pic).

If I'm thinking the same thing he is, there wouldn't be any reaon that it would interfere with a lift. It seems like a good idea, I was just thinking about this the other day cause we put adjustable coilovers in my freinds impreza and after the new suspension went in, we couldn't get the jack out from under it.

2nd Generation

Thanks for everybody's input. The idea i had in mind was something that had like 4 rods that shot straight down and lifted the car. And the deal with the lift... the lift i use is one that has the 4 arms that u slide under the car. In other words u drive in between the 2 sides of the lift then slide 4 arms under it and then those lift the car up. I'm sure u guys know what im talkin about. And this car is an all out racer so airbags are out of the question but thanks for the suggestion.

The biggest problem I see is that you are going to add a significan t amount of weight to the vehicle by doing this arent you. If that is not a big concern there should be some way of coming up with a small pneumatic ram taht can be somehow attached to the frame rails and actuated by hooking an airhose to it. It would work jsut like the Indy cars do. They would have to be very small and sectioned though probably. I would assume you would want to mount to the frame otherwise you would need to modify the floor of the car more than likely for it to work. I would consider calling aorund to industrial supply companies in your area and tell them what youare wanting to do and see if they can come with some ideas to help you out. It can definitely be done, it is jsut a matter of how much money and how much time do you have.

You could use something similar to this http://www.higginson.on.ca/pdf/economax.pdf with a base plate attached to the tie rod end so you have something solid to lift on. It is a matter of finding the right cylinder for your application. I would think you would not need a very large one if you plan on using 4 of them to raise the car on each corner. Once you get the one that fits your need then it is a matter of plumbing all of the hoses and valves and things of that nature in so it all works. Jsut some ideas to think about. Like I said I bet there is a compnay in your area that specializes in Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, give them a call and see what they can do for you.

or if one... only ONE of you were even slightly manly you coulve just lifted the car up with human muscle power high enough to drag the jack out.

the flat jacks at tyre shops (the BIG hydraulic ones, not the smaller ones you buy at autostores..those are much taller) cant fit under my car becuase the jack points are like erm... TOO LOW hahaah. i cant even get my scissor jack under my car...stupid gen 3;s.. so much lower then they look

They already have kits out there for this... start searching.

You just plug in shop air (100psi or whatever) and "pop" the car is up on four pistons.

You'd need a good roll cage and some chassis reinforcments, but if you are already putting a ton of money in the car it shouldn't be a big deal.
