Thinking about changing out engines

I told my friend I wanted to put a small block V8 in my 05 Tacoma and he recommended the 283. I don't know to much about engines so I have a few questions.

1) Is this a good choice for a performance engine?
2) What vehicles do these usually come in, or where could I buy this engine?
3) Besides the engine itself, what else is needed to ensure a successful transfer of engines and leave my truck happy?

Thanks, Liquid.

Go to www.yotatech.com and do some reading about the SBC V8 swaps. You will find lots of info.

Leave it stock if you want the truck happy...

Putting some crappy (and small!) american V8 in you truck will make it slower and would be a total headache. The V6 (you did get the V6, right???) you got in there is already a good motor.

If you have the 4.0L V6 stick with it.

If you have the V6, GO find some avalon 2GR cyl heads and bolt those up, you will be very suprised by the ammount of power you gain.

OR

Bring the truck down here to SV-Engineering and let us turbocharge it

I’m located in North Carolina

Price depends directly on the amount of power you are looking for. To give you an idea though; a full custom turbo manifold for a V6 usually runs about $700. That includes laser cut flanges and port matching to the cyl heads. The turbocharger/s will of course cost a bit more.

If you are truly considering a custom turbo kit you should call me at 8282167719

I finally have the fuel mix right and its pulling well. A stock computer with piggybacks is not the answer for this motor. You really need to go with a good EMS to really get the power out of it. In the truck, an aditional injector controller would be fine but I need more revs with my trans badly. I run out of revs really fast in any gear. The power just continues to build as the RPM's climb. Just about the time the pasengers start to say OH shHHHHIIII.... its time to shift. Its getting a little annoying. I cant put the power down because the gears are so short and the redline is so low. Hense the need for the EMS, valve springs and high volume oil pump

Im building a single turbo "KIT" for the 3.4L and Im also considering doing the same for the 3.8L and 4.0L GR engines that are now available. I just need some vehicles for a week or so to prototype with. Of course the folks who are kind enough to voulenteer get a BIG discount on their equipment

If you are looking for a ginuea pig drop a line at TTORA. You might find someone. Did you do any bottom end or cyl head work? I haven't read of anyone really pushing the 3.4. I am curious as to its ability to build power with the stock pistons, crank and rods. For the ECU are you going stand alone, or are you going to use an EPROM such as the Techtom?
