I've noticed that I get a ton of dust on my truck. I'll wash it one afternoon and overnight the dust faerie visits so the next morning its covered with a light coating. I don't even have to drive it anywhere and its dusty. I park under a car port so I don't get dew on it (not that we get much dew in South Fla). I was wondering if those dusters like the Oxo or California duster really work? If I could just dust it off in the morning and maybe spot detail if necessary it would save me a lot of extra washes.
Yeah, they work. I have a CA Duster and I only use it when my truck just has some light dust, and I'm in a hurry. They can leave microscratches if they get real dirty. I know the package says, "The dirtier it gets, the better it works" but I don't really agree. Dirt is dirt, and dirt is not good to be rubbing across your paint. It will leave microscratches, which are especially visible on darker colored paints.
If you have about 15 minutes, a better method is to Quick Detail your vehicle. Quick detailing will remove the dust and also add some gloss and shine. I use a tight knit microfiber towel and a detailing spray (not spray wax). I just spray the mist a few feet ahead of where I'm wiping. Today I used a free sample of Griot's Garage Speed Shine. It works great. You just wipe back and forth and it's gone. It doesn't leave a waxy haze that you have to buff off. It's easy to mist on and wipe off. It added some nice gloss to my wax job, which was in need of some rejuvination.
Thanks for the info. I guess I'll skip the duster then, since I don't want to be getting any scratches. I got some Sonus Acrylic Spritz because it said its especially good after Klasse SG. Will that work ok? Also...you don't recommend wiping the dust off with anything before the spritz right? Just spray on the dust and wipe with the microfiber? Thanks as always Pb!
Just spray it right over the dust. It will act like a 'lube' for your towel and prevent any microscratches from the dust. It's always good to have some kind of lubrication when you're cleaning your paint.

No offense... but that sounds crazy. If you're spraying on the detailer onto the dust and then wiping you would be grinding in the dust/dirt particles into the paint.
I did this awhile back and was worried that I scratched my paint. After a thourogh washing and Mother's detailing the scuffs dissapeared.
We get a ridiculous amount of green tree pollen all spring...It is starting to happen right now, and after a few days everyone's car is covered in green dust. Would a daily dusting with a dust brush mitigate that witout scratching?

I was in a hurry so I thought I'd try the QD but it still took me almost 30 minutes to make it look decent. I'm going back to the full wash until after I get all the protection on my paint. Have to wait another week for time to do the Klasse.

It depends. Some pollen is soft, some is not. Just try wiping it off on a small area, and see what happens. You can always polish out a few microscratches real quick.

Yeah...I just cleaned it out...PM away...
PB...green pollen now all over the hood. It feels rough to the touch but the sides are smooth. Maybe it got into the AIO overnight while it was curing.
I'm going to try to smooth it out with a little buffing before I put the P21S (after I QD spray the hood to clean it up.) I'll check here once more before I do that,jusut in case you have any cautionary words...
(edit: the pollen felt coarse to the finger but it was loose. It all came right off with some QD spritz and a microfiber rag, and it felt smooth as a baby's bottom. P21S went on fine, but ut us hard to tell what a difference it may have made on a silver truck. The AIO lookd so damn sharp I don't know how much the carnuba helped, but it looks sweet)

No you're wrong. The QD spray acts as a lubricant. You are more likely to scratch if its all dry. You have two choices doing a quick detail between washes, wet or dry. Wet is safer.
Yeah, on pollen I would try using a leaf blower to get the majority of it off, then get the rest with a QD, a plush towel, and let the weight of the towel take it off. No rubbing unless the paint is CLEAN.
Fortunately I put down Klasse AIO yesterday. Tree pollen is a real problem here for several months. There was a layer of green dust on the truck just from overnight. Most people just leave it on and the cars look dirty for a few months, and if you did a good detailing before that, I guess it is the best thing. It is futile to stay on top of it because more accumulates each day until you have a sold layer of green pollen.
I think there is no perfect answer to whether you dust it off, leave it on, wash it off, QD it off. It is oneof those natural enemies of paint and it will affect it someway, and some damage, even slight, is inevitable.
Since I don't have a garage, all I can do is keep the paint protected as best as possible, stay on top of it, and try to minimize the 24/7 effects of nature.
While dusters have their place, I prefer to use a light detailer such as Showtime and spray about 4-6 shots on a 16" square or larger microfiber... then fold into quarters, grasp it by two parallel sides and dust lightly without putting any hand pressure on the finish (unless I have to). I re-fold and spray more Showtime as necessary. Works real nice.
