Powerwashing...Good or Bad?

Hey I am anal about keeping my car clean and I wash it with a pressure washer about once or twice a week and I just wanted to make sure there is nothing wrong with powerwashing my truck this often. Will I have to apply wax more often cause of the powerwasher? The water is heated will this affect anything? I don't know what PSI it is but it's probably pretty high as it is a commercial grade pressure washer not some little home POS from ACE Hardware.

Thanks

The hot water can make the soap more bubbly, but It can also make the wax wear off faster.

IMO, a mitt or sea sponge is the only thing that will safely get your paint really clean. You can use the pressure washer for rinsing, but don't depend on it to actually clean your paint very well. A pressure washer can be handy for spraying the wheel wells and undercarriage. Be careful with the paint though.

Anybody ever notice how those high pressure touch-less car washes still don't get your vehicle as clean as a real hand wash at home?

Unfortunatly hand wash at college is not an option...there are no hose hookups I can use and no driveway to wash it in. The Coin-Op drive in tunnel pressure wash is the only option for me at this point. When I'm at home I ususally do hand wash my truck but at college it's a whole different ball game. I normally don't soap my truck up with the pressure washer...I just use it to rinse off the dirt and bird crap then I dry it with microfiber towels. They do have a soft soap brush but I don't want the brush on my paint for fear of scratches.

There are products made for your particular situation, and all you need is a gl of water, bucket, mit, and a drying towel. Oh, and a parking space. Optimum No Rinse and Wash or Quick Easy Wash are designed for those who dont have access to a conventional method of washing. Simply add a capful, and wash and dry!

You just rinse and then dry. No soap?

I guarantee that there's still dirt on the surface. Then when you dry you'd be wiping dirt around.

To see if I'm right, once your truck is dirty, spray it off like you usually do, then let it air dry and wipe your finger on the paint then look at it. I bet there's still a film of dirt.

Take your mitt, bucket and soap to the car wash. Put in the minimum amount of quarters, spray the truck with water, fill up the bucket with water and then let the wash time run out. Then put soap on your mitt and wash her down. Put the mitt in the bucket to rinse out the dirt occasionally. Once she's all soaped up, start the pressure wash back up and rinse off.

You gotta use a mitt. Water pressure alone won't cut it.

A better method would be to use that Optimum NR, like excel said. It lifts dirt off of the surface, which makes it safer to wash, when using less water. All you need is a bucket of rinse water and a bucket of soapy water.

Yea I guess...it will be a pain in the ass to fill though cause even my Nalgene bottle can't fit under the spigot in the sink in the bathroom...let alone a gallon bucket. Oh well I'll manage.

Yee. I notice at my college all the cars are dirty!

I live at home so I roll through with the cleanest whips for sure.

I have also noticed that pressure washing doesn't do anything at all. I believe they use dirty water and it leaves nasty water spots on the cars.

Pressure washers are good for the tires, wheels and undercarriage. Especially if you just got all muddy and stuff.

I use the foam brush to get my wheels clean and tires, but if I had aftermarket wheels I would not even think about using that awful brush.

I actually saw some dude with a brand new Mustang GT using that foam brush on his car. I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I used it on my tires!!!!
