Masking?

When detailing and using PC, what should you mask off and under what circumstances.
Will the badges harm the buffing pads or the other way around?

I've never used a buffer, have one now, and waiting for products from Autopia.

I just kind of go around the emblems. They won't hurt the pads though. Then I go back with a foam applicator and get the tight spots I missed.
