PC Buffer speed Guide

If you have a PC orbital buffer and you're not real sure about what speeds to use, this will help ya. http://www.bettercarcare.com/portercableuse.html Most of these products are Sonus, but you get the general idea, even if you're not using Sonus stuff.

And if you're polishing with a PC at 5 or 6, be sure to rest the PC+pad+polish on the paint, spread the polish a bit, and then turn on the machine - otherwise you'll have a polish shower all over yourself and your car/truck to deal with. Learned this one the hard way first time I used my PC

I've got a question. I just bought a Rockford Polisher at wal mart for $30, is it good? My friend said Polishers like it in general scratches cars? Is this true?

Buffers don't scratch paint, but using the wrong pads, bonnets, and polishing compounds can damage the paint.

These kinds of buffers are really only good for applying wax. They can't really polish. They are a waste of money, IMO.

This kind of orbital buffer can do pretty much everything, and is great for noobs.

Rotary buffers can produce results real fast, but should only be used by an experienced detailer.

I have something that looks like the 2nd one. it's electric and portable. So i think it is the kind for polishing?

Could you tell me if I should return it or not?

Yeah, I would return it. I'm pretty sure that a battery powered buffer wouldn't last long enough, or have enough power. Plus I don't think that's an orbital buffer. It looks like a rotary. Orbital action is much safer on the paint than rotary.

I got my PC from amazon.com. It was $119 w/ free shipping to the continental US. I live in hawaii, so I mailed it to my brother in NY and had him send it to me. Now I just need to buy a backing pad, some foam pads, and some good polish just to get rid of those microscratches that are so hard to avoid from washing, thinking Poorboys SSR1 for that.

Get a Porter Cable 7336 from Lowe's. Sometimes they are on sale for under $100. Or just buy a whole kit with the buffer and pads from Autopia or Autogeek.net

Is there any difference between the PC 7336 and the 7424?

The counter-weight is bigger on the 7336, which is actually a good thing, if you use 6" or 7" pads. The 7424 is better with 4" pads. Nothing to worry about really. Just get whatever one has the best price.
