uneven paint...

Earlier today I did some rust repair, then applied some paint to the previously rusted section.
However, after I sprayed on the paint, I noticed that the new layer of paint is abit higher in level compare to the original paint. Now do I take some ultra-fine sandpaper and sand it down so it is the same level?
I have to sand it no matter what because there was some paint running and dripping abit. So I'll have to sand it down anyhow.
But even after I sand it and re-paint it again, the paint will be slightly hight then the original so just wondering how would I fix this?

Thank you fellows!!

I doubt you can wet sand enough without sanding through the clear or base coat. You might have to sand it all the way down to metal and start over. Do primer, then a couple light base coats, then a clear coat. Then wet sand with 1500 and 2000 grit. Then polish to remove the sandpaper haze.

currently there is no clear coat on it, its only the base coat of paint. But the new paint sits higher then the original paint, so I was just wondering if i can wet sand down the base paint till it is flush with the original paint, or will I have to bring it down again to metal and primer it again?
