Anyone know how long a wash mitt should last? I buy what I think are good quality sheepskin mitts but they after a couple washes I start getting holes in them and by 10 washes they are pretty much useless. The mitt in the photo is only 4 weeks old and cost over $14. I've tried different mitts with the same problem so I don't think I just got a bad one. I can't figure it out, I don't wash particularly rough or catch it on anthing. Its only used on the painted surfaces and chrome part of the wheels. I do rinse the mitt very well after use and I shake it out and air dry it. The darn thing sheds worse than my cats!! Could my soap be eating up the mitt (eek whats that do to the paint!) or do I expect it to last too long? I'm using up the last of my zip wax car wash before I start in on a new gallon of Meguires wash. Here's the link to the mitt new on autogeek http://autogeek.net/sheepwas.html

Yeah, I notice the sheepskin mitts shed a lot and are not too durable. I find they last longer if you squeeze them instead of ring them out when you rinse them. That might be your problem. Be gentle! Don't know about those holes though..I've never gotten holes , before.
I don't buy the expensive ones...don't know if that is baaad or not...as long as they say they are 100% sheepskin and are plush and soft, I'll buy it. If the elastic around the wrist is rough, I'll tuck it in the mitt as I wash. Bought the one I'm using now for ~$5
I think that mitt is wayyyy finished.

I've had bad luck with AutoGeek mitts too. My Griots Garage Sheepskin mitt is holding up a lot better. It's about a year old now and still looks like new, pretty much.
Well it looks like I should just go with the cheap mitts and use them up! Nobody seems to think its the soap but I do have a second new mitt (unused) and when I change soaps I'll start using that to see if it will last any longer. I had a $7 mitt from Walmart that also fell apart so I thought maybe I was going too cheap. If I am too rough on the mitts I can try just hold it without putting my hand inside the pocket. I'll try a Griots mitt if I place an order for some other stuff later on. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

I have the same problem and is pisses me off I get my mitts at Canadian Tire I Basically do what you do I guess that’s the price of getting a sheep skin mitt
Is there anything wrong with a microfibre mitt that everyone seems to be using sheepskin?
Naw-I love my microfiber mitt. Now they say it's better to wash with microfiber and wax with one too. Just toss it if it falls on the ground.

I recommend getting the cheap ones and just going through them. The mitts retain residue no matter how carefully you rinse them and I don't think it's a good idea for the paint to be using a mitt filled with residue and whatever is sticking to it.
horrible. Broke apart after several washed. holes. etc.
I'm back using those terry-towel, 100% cotton mitts. They work the same I think. I don't use the bucket and soap method... I wash a section, spray mit down, put some soap on mit, repeat.
