Do I need to get a polisher?

Okay, here's the dilemma. This weekend is gonna be nice, so I want to wash, and wax my truck, to get rid of the swirls. Now, a few years ago, for my anniversary, my wife got me a RO buffer. From all the reading I've been doing, I've been using it wrong, no surprise , but now I'm a little better armed for the task at hand. This is basically what I have

Now, I know the Porter Cable 7232 is the weapon of choice for most people here, but can I use this to get similar results? Some of the differences are the fact that instead of a hook and loop, it uses a foam base and you change the hats. I can get different applicators to stretch over the base, and I know which ones to use now. I'm just curious as to whether this will work for my needs or not. It orbits at about 800-900rpm, and is a really reliable machine. Is there any special techniqes I need because it's not a polisher, but a buffer?

You can get a foam bonnet and try, but I'm not sure it will have the speed and power to make the polish break-down and do its job properly. It certainly can't hurt to try it, but don't expect to get perfect results. It can probably get out some light swirls.

You know... you'll be able to show your wife you appreciated her thoughts as well as probably save your arms from doing it by hand. And of course you'll also have a nice coat of wax on the car.

And if you find out what it does (or doesn't do) for marring, you can always either take it to a detailer to fix the marring, or save up for a PC at some point in the future... but in the meantime, you'll be able to show your wife you appreciated her thoughts.
