For starters, I'd say at the least, wash, detail the trim, clay, wax.

Try Mothers Clay Bar and Carnauba Cleaner Wax.

More help is here: detailguide.com and Clay Bar Video

Clean the wheels & tires first

Wash (Meguiars gold class shampoo, sheepskin wash mit)
Claybar (Mothers kit works great)
Re-Wash
Polish (Meguiars #2 fine cut cleaner)
Glaze (3m Imperial Hand Glaze)
Wax (3m Liquid Wax)

Porter Cable 7424 buffer will help a lot if your car is in pretty bad shape. It can do things that would take forever by hand.

If it rains a lot, I probably wouldn't recommend carnauba wax, carnauba is more known for shine then protection.

You first want to make sure you get good rain protection and good beading results. As for over the counter products, Meguiar's NXT wax would be your best choice. But if you can get your hands on Klasse All-In-One and Klasse Sealant Glaze, that would work as well.

But if your looking at a full detail, you'd need some good polish, I recommend the Pinnacle XMT line of polishes, ranging from XMT 1 to as harsh as XMT 3. Then apply with XMT Glaze and top it off at a nice Souveran Paste wax.
