Gen5 Upholstery protectant and Scotch Guarding

I have an 05 Camry XLE with that gray cloth, valore-like, plush upholstery on my seats and doors. I want to protect it from dirt and stains, but I have some questions:

1) Has anyone had good success using 3M Scotch Guard on this sort of material? Are there other good products?

2) What is the best way to apply it to avoid spillover to the non-cloth areas? Will spillover hurt the vinyl and plastic around the cloth? Masking seems like it would be complicated, since some of those door panels are so small, and since the center console is right up against the seats.

3) Any other related advice?

I just wipe off the ScotchGuard overspray. It doesn't seem to sink in to leather and plastic. But I would try a small test area first. Vehicles are different.

Does anyone maybe paint it on? Dab it with rag?

I've never wiped it on.

You could tape it off or cover the areas with a rag or Saran Wrap.

That's a good idea. I should do the same thing with my car.

Blue 3M painter's tape and newspaper works great for any masking application I've ever had. Haven't tried door panels yet though. The tape may not stick well if you've used protectant on the vinyl. Just have to try it.

I've also thought about using that sticky carpet protector film that they use on car floors at dealerships. Seems like that would make a great masking product. They sell that stuff at carpeting outlets. Think I've seen it at Home Depot or Lowe's too. Again, haven't tried it on a door panel, so just an idea.

I used scotch guard on the wifes O4 Accords cloth interior (light tan) when we got it 3yrs ago, and the it still appears clean as new...I didn't tape off anything, just wiped the over spray off the plastic. Any spots that have appeared, easily wipes off with a damp Microfiber towel...I recommend it, and will use it again!
